All-Around Effort Leads Men’s Hoops to Victory at No. 11 Elmhurst

Titans win at Elmhurst for first time since 2018-19 season

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team started off College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with a huge, 68-54, road win over No. 11 Elmhurst University Wednesday, Nov. 30. The Titans improve to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play, while the Bluejays fall to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. 

The Titans win was a total team effort as five players finished in double digits. Senior Lucas Heflen (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) led the way with 14 points, and team highs in assists and steals with three apiece. Fellow senior Cody Mitchell (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) had 13 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Hakim Williams (Round Lake, Ill.-Round Lake) and junior Ryan Sroka (Lake in the Hills, Ill.-Huntley) each finished with their first career double-doubles as both recorded 11-point, 11-rebound performances. Sophomore Harrison Wilmsen (St. Louis, Ill.-St. Louis Priory) finished with 10 points and seven boards. 

Illinois Wesleyan shot 39.1 percent (25-of-64) from the floor, including a 7-of-23 from the three point line. IWU was 11-of-15 from the free throw line, beating the Bluejays 10-of-19 performance from the charity stripe. Elmhurst shot 26.9 percent (18-of-67) from the floor and 8-of-31 from beyond the arc. The Titans won the rebounding battle 58-37 while also besting the Bluejays in points in the paint (26-12) and second chance points (17-9). 

A Ryan Sroka three-pointer tied the game up at 5-5 with 18 minutes left in the first half which fueled an 11-0 run from the Titans. 

With the score at 23-17 in the first half, the Titans defense held Bluejays scoreless for four minutes as IWU went on a 12-0 run, including a Pryce Punkay (Champaign, Ill.-Champaign Central) three at the eight minute mark. 

The Bluejays cut the lead to nine points with 11:07 remaining in the game, before a Hakim Williams three pushed the Titans to a 14-point advantage with under seven minutes to go.

Heflen hit five free throws in the final two minutes of the game to ice the Titans road win, giving IWU its first win at R.A. Faganel Hall since the 2018-19 season. 

Illinois Wesleyan wraps up its lengthy roadtrip Saturday, Dec. 3 with a visit to Van Male Fieldhouse on the campus of Carroll University. Tipoff is slated for 4:15 p.m. and will follow the IWU women's basketball CCIW clash with the Pioneers.
