Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Hoops Moves to 2-0 in CCIW with Win at Carroll

Bazzell scores career-high 14 points off the bench

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team used a strong second half to cruise past Carroll University Saturday night, Dec. 3, at Van Male Fieldhouse. With the 73-59 victory, the Titans remain perfect in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play at 2-0 and hold a 4-3 overall record. Meanwhile, the Pioneers drop to 2-7 (0-2 CCIW).

Four Titans finished in double figures in points, led by sophomore Harrison Wilmsen's (St. Louis, Mo.-Priory) 18-point performance. Sophomore Trey Bazzell (Fairbury, Ill.-Prairie Central) dropped a career-high 14 points off the bench, including four three-pointers, while senior Cody Mitchell (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) recorded a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double. Senior Lucas Heflen (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) added 13 points.

IWU concluded the game with a 52.6 field goal percentage, hitting 30-of-57 shots, and knocked down seven three-pointers. Carroll, which finished 22-for-52 from the floor, used a 36.4 clip (8-for-22) from three to hang with the Titans early on.

The Green and White pulled in 38 rebounds, while CU tallied just 19 in the contest. Mitchell's 11 boards were a game-high, while Wilmsen added seven. The rebounding advantage led to an 18-8 lead for the Titans in second chance points. IWU also finished the night with a whopping 42-18 stronghold in the paint, including limiting CU to just six in the second half.

Illinois Wesleyan used its size advantage to get out in front, 5-0. After hitting a hook shot off the opening tip, Wilmsen drilled a three to push IWU ahead.

The Titans maintained a five-point cushion for a while, but the hot shooting from beyond the arc by the Pioneers trimmed the Green and White's lead to two, 19-17. Carroll hit its fifth triple of the day to pull within two and force a Ron Rose timeout with 11:42 to go in the period.

After Carroll claimed its first lead of the day on an and-one, junior Ryan Sroka (Lake in the Hills, Ill.-Huntley) knocked down his signature pull-up jumper from the free throw line. Bazzell took it from there, hitting back-to-back three-balls to return the Illinois Wesleyan lead to five, 27-22.

The Pios fought back, eventually evening the score at 33 all, but a tip-in from sophomore Marko Anderson (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) and another triple from Bazzell swung momentum back in favor of the Titans. Mitchell capped the half with a gritty putback, giving IWU a 40-35 lead at the break.

CU used a 6-for-13 effort from beyond the arc to hang with Illinois Wesleyan over the first 20 minutes, while the Titans doubled up the Pioneers in the paint, 24-12.

A tight start to the half saw the home team come within as few as two, but the IWU seniors started a quick run. After Mitchell's strong take, Heflen converted a crafty layup. Junior Evan Schneider (St. Louis, Mo.-Ladue) then found Bazzell for an easy two before Mitchell drained a three in front of the Titan bench to cap a 9-0 run and force a Carroll timeout.

Leading by 11, the Titans expanded their advantage to as many as 18 as Illinois Wesleyan pulled away for a 73-59 victory and pushed its record to 2-0 in league play.

The Green and White return home for the first time in nearly a month Saturday, Dec. 10, for a 7:15 p.m. clash with North Central College inside the Shirk Center.
