Women’s Soccer Welcomes Carroll for Senior Day Showdown

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Neis Field

 BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team is scheduled to play Carroll University Saturday, Oct. 8 in the Titans' last regular-season home game. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. and will act as the first leg of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team who are scheduled to play at 3:30 p.m.
 
The Green and White will also recognize its four "true" seniors before the match for senior day including Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic), Maggie Peters (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community), Jenna Li (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Christian School), and Riley Haug (Elmhurst, Ill.-York University). Fifth-year seniors Rachel White (Naperville,Ill.-Waubonise Valleyy), Madison Fischer (Orland Park, Ill.- Carl Sandburg), Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community), and Heather Dietrich (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo), who were honored last season, will also compete in their final regular season game at Neis.
 
The Titans have moved to a 6-1-2 overall record and 4-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, as Carroll sits at 8-2-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the CCIW. Illinois Wesleyan's CCIW record marks the first time the Titans have been undefeated in the first four games of a conference schedule since the 2015 squad went 7-0 in the league. As a unit, the Titans have compiled an impressive 26 goals this season and have kept the opposition to six, half of which came from a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Wartburg College early in the year. On average, IWU is scoring 2.89 goals per game compared to its opponents 0.67 clip. Not only have the Titans been scoring but they are also connecting to create offensive attacks with a total 25 assists.
 
Against the Pioneers, the Titans have only played Carroll a total of eight times with Saturday's contest to mark the ninth-time in program history. Ahead in the all-time series, 6-1-1, the Titans most recently defeated the Pioneers, 3-1 Oct. 23 in Waukesha, Wis. Saturday's game also marks the first time IWU will host CU since 2018, where the Titans lost 1-0 at home. 

Dating back to the IWU-Albion match Sept. 20, the Green and White have not let up any goals in its last 531 minutes of game play. Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) has recorded five shutouts this season and now seven shutouts in her career. Offensively, fifth-year senior Steffens leads the Green and White in points with 26, credited to her 12 goals and two assists. Followed by sophomore Liza Matimore (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) with a total 17 points on the season, six goals and five assists, and senior Shanks rounds out the top three in points with 14 on the Titans squad with five goals and four assists. 
 
Senior Li, a transfer student from Knox College joined the Titan squad last season in 2021. Li came into the team and played a role right away, starting and playing in every game she was at so far. The reliable midfielder has notched a total of two goals and five assists in the Green and White uniform, and six goals and nine assists up to this point in her collegiate career. 
 
Shanks, Peters, and Haug, a trio that has been with the Titans since 2019 compiled an overall record of 32-15-2. A class that was affected by COIVD-19 in 2020, helped the Titans to CCIW Tournament Champions and to a NCAA Tournament run in 2019, to Co-Regular Season Champions in 2021, and continue to fight to keep the 2022 season alive. 
Shanks, an All-CCIW First Team selection in 2021, has played in every game as a Titan for the past four years. Just last Wednesday, Oct. 5 marked Shanks 50th game for IWU. In those 50 games, the Bloomington, Ill. native has recorded 19 goals and 19 assists for a total of 57 points and a career nine game-winning goals. 
 
Peters, a solid defender for the Titans and co-captain has tallied a total of 41 games for IWU. Peters notched her first-career goal and assist last season. She scored her first collegiate goal against North Central College, Oct. 13 and secured her first career assist over North Park University, Sept. 25. This season Peters most recently assisted fellow senior Shanks in the Titans 3-0 victory over Augustana, Oct. 5, just one minute and 14 seconds into the game. 
 
Haug has played in 19 games for the Green and White. An outside back, similarly she scored her first-collegiate goal last season in 2021. In the Titans' 8-0 victory over Carthage, Oct. 30 2021, Haug earned the IWU's fifth goal of the match. 
 
In the national rankings, Steffens, a fifth-year senior and transfer student, is ranked within the top-five of active players across all divisions in goals and points. The Normal, Ill. native's time at Wisconsin-Platteville, her freshman year, saw Steffens record 60 points due to her 26 goals and eight assists. In her IWU career, Steffens has tallied a total of 88 points, 37 goals, and 14 assists. Combined Steffens holds an impressive 148 points ranking her fourth in the nation in points and second in the nation in goals with 63.
