Women’s Volleyball Falls in Five to NCC

Travels to St. Louis for two games on Saturday, Oct. 8

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team could not hold off North Central College Wednesday night, Oct. 5, in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play inside the Shirk Center. The Titans (10-6, 2-2 CCIW) won the opening set but ultimately dropped the match to the Cardinals (8-4, 3-1 CCIW) in five sets (15-25, 25-20, 25-20, 29-31, 15-10).

Illinois Wesleyan hit .206 for the match, but saw North Central compiled a .244 attacking percentage. IWU held a 67-62 edge in kills, but NCC earned an 87-79 advantage in digs. The Green and White tallied 11 blocks, while North Central was credited with seven.

Freshman Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) paced the Titan offense with 22 kills on a .246 clip. She completed her 10th double-double of the season with 10 digs and also tallied three aces and a block. Sophomore Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley) recorded a team-high 30 assists and recorded 16 digs, while tacking on two kills. Freshman Katie Gund (Pewaukee, Wis.-Pewaukee) returned to the lineup and produced 25 assists and eight digs. 

Sophomore Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) tacked on 12 kills with a .400 hitting percentage, including four kills in the thrilling fourth set. 

The Titans never trailed in the first set, hitting .235 while limiting the Cardinals to a .100 clip, en route to a convincing opening set victory.

NCC clawed back in the second and third sets though, using a combined 11 lead changes and 19 ties to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Illinois Wesleyan rallied back to take the fourth set in extra points, winning on a Harrington kill. The Titans found themselves facing match point, as the Cardinals went up 29-28, but gutted out three straight points to push for a decisive fifth set.

With the score at 10-8 in favor of the Green and White, North Central went on a 7-0 run to close the match out, defeating the Titans 15-10. 

IWU travels to St. Louis, Mo. Saturday, Oct. 8, to compete in the WashU tournament. The Titans will face Illinois College at 12 p.m. and Luther College at 2 p.m.
