Women’s Volleyball Splits Final Day of Regular Season

Titans return to action Tuesday, Nov. 1 in CCIW Quarterfinals

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team split on the final day of the Illinois Wesleyan Classic III Saturday, Oct. 29. The Titans (17-11, 3-4 CCIW) opened the day with a sweep over St. Norbert College before concluding their regular season with a four-set loss to No. 9 Wittenberg University.

Senior Evy Makris (Orland Park, Ill.-Sandburg) and freshman Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) landed on the All-Tournament team after their stellar weekend. Makris recorded 17 kills and nine blocks while hitting .240 on the weekend. French led the Titans with 49 kills in 12 sets on a .220 clip in the tournament. The freshman notched seven service aces and 72 digs as she finished all three matches with a double-double performance.

The Titans needed just 66 minutes to sweep St. Norbert (15-13, 10-3) to open the last day of the tournament. Illinois Wesleyan held an advantage over the Green Knights in almost every category. The Titans compiled 38 kills on a .241 clip, while St. Norbert had 26 kills with a mere .070 attack percentage. IWU led the match in assists (37-26), blocks (6-1), and aces (8-3). St. Norbert had the upperhand in digs with 53, while Illinois Wesleyan recorded 50.

The first set saw two of the four lead changes in the match. IWU jumped out to take the first point on a kill from French, but SNC took its only lead of the set after taking the next two points on a service error and kill to go up 2-1. The Titans quickly regrouped as they took control of the set on two Green Knight attack errors to take the lead, 6-5. Never trailing the remainder of the set, freshman Katie Gund (Pewaukee, Wis.-Pewaukee) closed the set out with an ace as the Titans took the first set 25-18.

St. Norbert took the first two points in the second set, using a kill and an ace to do so. IWU came back as junior Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) registered a kill to tie the set up at five each, and used a six-point run following to take a commanding 10-5 lead, and never looked back. The Titans closed the second set out on a French kill, 25-14.

The Green Knights opened the third set similar to the first, as they took the first three points. Once again, IWU answered with six straight points to regain control, by way of three French kills and three SNC errors. The Titans never looked back, as they went on to complete the sweep with a 25-16 set three victory.

French led the match in kills and aces, as she notched 12 and three, respectively, on a .367 clip. The Romeoville, Ill. native rounded out her double-double performance with 12 digs. Senior Dana Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg), junior Taylor Babec (Joliet, Ill.-Plainfield Central) and Summers each had six kills. Junior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) recorded a match-high 13 digs in the three-set victory.

In the final match of the regular season, Illinois Wesleyan fell to the nationally-ranked Wittenberg team in a four-set battle (25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17). The Tigers (21-4, 7-0 NCAC) used 54 kills with a .216 attack percentage and held the home team to a .145 clip with 51 kills. Wittenberg held an advantage in assists (51-45), aces (7-1), blocks (12-8), and digs (92-81) as well.

French registered her second double-double performance of the day, with 23 kills and 18 digs. Junior Courtney Heffren (Eureka, Ill.-Eureka) led the match with 26 digs.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in the Quarterfinals of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament. The Titans, who are the sixth seed, will travel to Decatur, Ill. to face third-seed Millikin University.
