Women’s Volleyball Sees Season End in CCIW Quarterfinal

Titans finish 2022 season 17-14

DECATUR, Ill. - The sixth-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team fell in four sets (25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22) to third-seeded Millikin University in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Quarterfinals Tuesday night, Nov. 1, at the Griswold Center. The Titans finish the 2022 season with a record of 17-14, while the Big Blue advance to the CCIW semifinal to face No. 2 seed North Park University.

Millikin used 65 kills on a .289 attack percentage to its advantage, and held the Titans to 47 kills on a .152 clip. The Big Blue recorded 61 assists to IWU's 43, but the Titans led in every other statistical category. Illinois Wesleyan held an advantage in aces (6-1), blocks (9-7), and digs (70-66).

Freshman Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) finished the match with a team-best 18 kills with a .351 clip, and notched her 17th double-double performance with 11 digs. Senior Dana Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) and junior Ellie Eager (Mendota, Ill.-Marquette Academy), who is graduating early, finished with seven kills each in their final game for the Green and White.

Junior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) led the Titans with 18 digs, followed by junior Courtney Heffren (Eureka, Ill.-Eureka) with 14. Senior Evy Makris (Orland Park, Ill.-Sandburg) notched five of the Titans' nine blocks, two on solo rejections, in the finale of her Titan career.

Freshman Katie Gund (Pewaukee, Wis.-Pewaukee) and sophomore Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley) distributed the IWU attack, finishing with 18 and 14 assists, respectively.

In the first set of the match, Millikin jumped out to a 5-2 match, but the Titans rattled off three straight points on two kills from Kiszkowski and an ace from Washko to even the match at five all.  The game saw back-and-forth action until Millikin used an 8-1 run to go up 23-16, before eventually taking the first set, 25-18.

Millikin took the first three points of the second match before French ended the Big Blue rally with a kill and a service ace. Trailing 14-11, the Titans went on a 5-1 using two MU attack errors and three kills from three different Titans to take a 17-16 lead. Heffren registered a kill to bring the Titans to set point, and a Big Blue service error evened the match at one set a piece.

With the third set tied at 13 all, the Big Blue took seven of the next eight points to take a 20-14 lead. Trailing 24-20, a French kill, solo block from Makris, and a Big Blue attack error brought the game within one. However, IWU's comeback was thwarted as Millikin's Kailee Itzenhuiser secured the third set for the home team with a kill.

The fourth set remained close until Millikin went on a 5-1 run to go up 14-9. The Titans regrouped shortly after, and used five straight points to take the lead 18-17, but could not hold off a late run from the home team as Millikin defeated Illinois Wesleyan in four sets.

The Titans, who posted a 17-14 record in 2022, are set to return all but three from this year's roster next season.
