Swimming and Diving Completes Season Opener at Lewis

Titans back in the pool for IWU Halloween Invite, Oct. 29

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's swimming and diving teams left its season opener with losses Friday, Oct. 14 against Division II Lewis University. The men's squad fell to the Flyers, 142-37, while the women were defeated by a score of 130-69. IWU competed in 22 events at the Lewis Pool in Romeoville, Ill.

For the women's team, junior Natalie Wajda (Park Ridge, Ill. - Maine South) swam a second-place finish in the 200 yard freestyle and in the 500 yard freestyle, touching in times of 2:04.94 and 5:35.52, respectively. 

Also earning a second-place time was freshman Kayleigh Kuschewski (Batavia, Ill. - Batavia) in the 200 yard individual medley, touching in a time of 2:21.49. Junior Jackie Rae Kelch (Peoria, Ill. - Notre Dame) notched second place in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.95 as sophomore Hadley Fudge (Stanford, Ill. - University) also recorded a second-place time in the 100 yard breaststroke and clocked in a time of 1:09.48. In the long-distant 1000 yard freestyle, sophomore Alexa Starkey (Normal, Ill. - Normal Community West) tallied a second-place time of 11:48.08 to round out the top finishes for the Titans.

On the men's squad, the Green and White finished as high as a third-place standing. Sophomore Alex Kula (Pekin, Ill. - Pekin Community) notched a third-place time of 49.88 in the 100 yard freestyle.

Junior Ethan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill. - Normal Community) earned third place in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.16. Fellow junior Jake Kalenowski (South Elgin, Ill. - St. Charles North) touched in a time of 56.02, to earn third in the 100 yard butterfly.     

The Titans return to the pool to host the IWU Halloween Invite Saturday, Oct. 29 in Fort Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Bloomington.
