Swimming & Diving Sweeps Big Blue in Decatur

13 Titans picked up individual wins

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's swimming and diving team swept Millikin University on the road Friday night, Jan. 21. The women's team outscored the Big Blue 114-91, while the men topped MU by a final score of 119-69. Together the Titans won 17 out of 22 events with 13 different Titans placing first in an individual event. 

Sophomore Ethan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) led the Green and White with two individual wins. Lowder placed first in the 200 yard individual medley with a career-best time of 2:06.83, just over two seconds faster than his previous best of 2:08.30. The sophomore also touched in a season-best first place finish in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 56.32. 

For the men, freshmen Colin McKibben (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) and Alex Kula (Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community) picked up wins in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:18.55) and in the 50 yard freestyle (23.05), respectively. Sophomore Lane Wagner (Danville, Ill.-Danville) swam a season-best in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.56 to earn him a first place finish. 

Fellow sophomores Henry Moore (Champaign, Ill.-Centennial) and Jake Kalenowski (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) also represented the Green and White with first place rankings. Moore swam a time of 1:00.34 in the 100 yard butterfly, as Kalenwoski earned his first place finish in the 500 yard freestyle touching in at 5:09.14. 

Rounding out the men's top-place finishes was senior Mason McCauley (Deerfield, Ill.-Deerfield), with a career-best time of 1:03.74 in the 100 yard breaststroke. 

On the women's side senior Megan Wong (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) set the pace for the Titans in the 1000 yard freestyle to claim the first individual win of the meet. Wong touched in at 11:08.55, a career-best, alongside Lauren Feddersen (Champaign, Ill.-Centennial) (11:14.19) and Jade Kaminska (Jablonna, Mazovia, Poland-Maria Knopnicka) (11:18.48) to round out the top three places, respectively. 

Joining Wong, Feddersen was one out of six Titans on the women's side who claimed a first-place finish. The Champaign, Ill. native earned the Green and White a win in the 100 yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:09.95. 

Junior Shannon Murphy (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) swam a career-best time in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.80 to beat out her previous best of 2:07.03.

Freshman Hadley Fudge (Stanford, Ill.-University), sophomore Natalie Wajda (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South), and senior Ellen Gilbert (Northbrook, Ill.-Glenbrook North) each picked up one win apiece for the Green and White as the Titans boosted their win streak against the Big Blue to 12.

IWU has a short layover, as the Titans return to action at Carthage College tomorrow, Jan. 22. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
