Survive and Advance: Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off George Fox

Titans take on No. 10 Messiah tomorrow, May 9, at 11 a.m. ET

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team survived a second half charge by George Fox University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon, May 8. Illinois Wesleyan held off George Fox, 13-12, to advance to a second round matchup against No. 10 Messiah University tomorrow, May 9, at 2 p.m. ET on the campus of Rhodes College.

IWU boosted its record to 11-3 on the season with the postseason victory, while George Fox finished the season with a 13-1 record.

The Titans took a 9-3 lead into the half, but the Bruins mounted a second-half comeback to make things interesting late. Junior Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) scored less than two minutes into the second half to give Illinois Wesleyan its largest lead of the afternoon, 10-3.

George Fox responded with a goal 45 seconds later, which ultimately kickstarted the Bruins' rally as they pulled within three, 10-7, with 18:39 left on the clock. Senior Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-Resurrection Prep) scored to break the George Fox run. 

With IWU leading 13-8, the Bruins scored four goals to trim the Titan lead to one, 13-12, with 5:11 remaining.

The Illinois Wesleyan defense held strong from there on out, as senior Janaye Godfrey (Portland, Ore.-Lincoln) stopped the lone shot by George Fox to preserve the win.

Torres and junior Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) led the Titans with three goals apiece, with Jones also adding an assist. Elliott finished with two goals and a helper, while senior Riley Ronney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) tallied two goals. Junior Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist), sophomore Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) and senior Hannah Foley (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) contributed one goal each, with Gleason notching an assist as well.

O'Malley was IWU's draw control leader with 11, while Jones and Rooney added four and three, respectively. 

Defensively, Torres and freshman Hannah Trousdale (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Hoffman Estates) notched two caused turnovers each. Torres also tied for the team lead in ground balls, as her and senior Anna Peters (Lake Oswego, Ore.-Lakeridge) finished with three apiece. Godfrey finished with 12 saves.

Illinois Wesleyan will meet 10th-ranked Messiah in the second round tomorrow, May 9. Game time is slated for 11 a.m. ET on the campus of Rhodes College.
