Women’s Lacrosse Closes Out Season in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Titans finish their season with 11-4 record

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team could not keep pace with 10th-ranked Messiah University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday, May 9 after a 20-3 loss. The Titans finish the season with an 11-4 overall record, while the Ravens advanced to 17-0 and to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. 

Senior Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St.Charles East) led the Titans with two goals, she also picked up three draw controls and one ground ball. Junior Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) scored the Titans first goal of the game and led the team with five draw controls, while senior Anna Peters (Lake Oswego, Ore.-Lakeridge) had the team high two ground balls. 

IWU's three goalies, senior Janaye Godfrey (Portland, Ore-Lincoln), sophomore Rebecca Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich Senior), and freshman Olivia Mangan (Franklin, Wis.-Franklin) all saw the field, as Godfrey made seven saves and Rymarcsuk stopped nine.  

Messiah struck first, before O'Malley tied the score at 1-1 early on. The Ravens went on to score the next 13 goals to take a 14-1 lead at the half.

Rooney notched a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes, the second of which was assisted by senior Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-Resurrection Prep), but it was not enough to overcome MU as IWU fell 20-3.

The game marked the final in the careers of Janaye Godfrey, Hannah Foley (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant), Anna Peters, Riley Rooney, and Maggie Torres. Together, the group led the Titans to four NCAA Tournament appearances, 47 wins, two College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament titles, and three CCIW Regular Season Championships.
