Titans collect first CCIW win of the season

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team overpowered Augustana College in a 19-4 win Saturday, April 3. The Titans claimed their first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win of the season, advancing to 1-1 in the CCIW and 7-3 overall. The Vikings move to 4-5 on the season and 0-1 in the CCIW.

The Titans were led by senior Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East), who tied a career-high with seven points, on five goals and two assists to the mix. Junior Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) sat right behind Rooney with four goals and one assist, rounding out a total of five points. Senior Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-Resurrection Prep College) collected a season-high of five points which tied her career-best. Torres net three goals and added two assists for the Green and White.

Junior Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) added three goals while fellow junior Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) and sophomore Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) each put up two goals to round out the scoring for the Titans.

Between the posts for IWU was senior Janaye Godfrey (Portland, Ore.-Lincoln) and sophomore Rebecca Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich Senior). Godfrey got the start while Rymarcsuk came in at the half and made three saves to go along with three ground balls.

IWU took an early 3-0 lead as Elliott opened the scoring for the Green and White, and Gleason and Rooney followed with goals of their own. The Vikings eventually broke through to put themselves on the board with Illinois Wesleyan up 3-1.

The Titans broke the double digit threshold on a seven goal run kicked off by Rooney, leading to a 10-1 Titan advantage with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. IWU registered four more goals while Augie collected two, finishing the half 14-3.

In the second half, the Titans limited the Vikings scoring to one as IWU kept their foot on the pedal, registering five more goals to collect the CCIW win 19-4.

The Titans are back in action Wednesday, April 7 for a midweek game against Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. at Art Keller Field. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
