Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Carthage 17-8

Jones, Elliott tally four goals each

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team cruised to a 17-8 win at Carthage College Wednesday evening, April 7. The win boosted the Titans' record to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while Carthage stumbled to 3-5, 0-2 CCIW.

Juniors Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) and Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) led the Titans with four goals each, while junior Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) added a hat trick, 11 draw controls, and four ground balls. Sophomore Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South), senior Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East), and freshman Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) tallied two apiece. Senior Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-Resurrection Prep College) was credited with six assists, Rooney and Gleason notched two each, and senior Hannah Foley (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) one.

Defensively, senior Janaye Godfrey (Portland, Ore.-Lincoln) registered 12 saves, and sophomore Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) caused a team-high three turnovers.

Illinois Wesleyan wasted little time, as Maldonado buried a shot in the back of the net to put IWU up 1-0 less than two minutes in.

Carthage notched the equalizer a minute later, but IWU responded with six straight goals to take control 7-1 and never looked back.

The Titans took a 10-4 lead into halftime, and pushed their lead to double digits with a goal by Rooney with 24:07 to go in the second half. A goal by Elliott upped the Titan lead to 12, but the Firebirds scored four times in the final 10 minutes to close the gap to 17-8.

Illinois Wesleyan remains on the road Saturday, April 10, for a 1 p.m. match at North Central College.
