Women's Lacrosse Outlasts Chicago in CCIW Thriller

Rooney nets game-winner with 3:30 to play

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team edged the University of Chicago in a thrilling College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match Thursday evening, April 22, at Tucci Stadium. The Titans came out victorious 14-13 in a back-and-forth affair to hand UC its first loss of the year. IWU climbed to 9-2 overall (3-1 CCIW) and moved into a three-way tie for first-place in the CCIW with the win. Chicago's record dropped to 6-1, 3-1 in the conference with the setback.

Chicago took a 13-12 lead on Lulu Hardy's goal with 6:04 to play. The Maroon won the ensuing draw control and got a shot off, but senior Janaye Godfrey (Portland, Ore.-Lincoln) made the stop to send the Titans off on the clear.

Junior Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) drove towards goal, spun around a UC defender, and buried the equalizer to even the score at 13 with 4:42 on the clock.

A clutch draw control from junior Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) led to a free position opportunity for senior Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) with 3:30 to play. Rooney fired one in the upper corner to give IWU a 14-13 advantage.

The Maroons did not let up, but Godfrey and the IWU defense was up for the task. Godfrey saved a free position shot, and the Titans forced a turnover to maintain the one-goal edge with 2:21 remaining.

The Green and White used up some clock, but a shot went wide and was recovered by Chicago, giving UC one last crack at an equalizer. After a timeout, Chicago fired off a shot with eight seconds to play, but Godfrey made the stop as IWU held on for the 14-13 victory.

Rooney, Jones, and freshman Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Conant) tallied a hat trick each. Rooney added an assist, while Jones and O'Malley tied for the team lead with four draw controls apiece. O'Malley and fellow junior Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) tallied two goals each, while senior Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-Resurrection Prep College) closed out the scoring with a goal and two assists.

Godfrey made 13 saves and added seven ground balls to go along with a caused turnover to lead IWU defensively. Jones and sophomore Jennie Hubbard (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) and Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) paced the Titans with two caused turnovers each as Illinois Wesleyan held Chicago to its lowest goal total of the season.

IWU finishes up the regular season with a 1 p.m. match at North Central College Saturday, April 25.
