NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Junior
Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) set the single game goal record as the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 21-12 victory at North Central College Saturday afternoon, April 24. With the win, the Titans claim a share of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title and carries a 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the CCIW record into the league tournament. Meanwhile, North Central's season comes to an end at 2-6 overall, 1-4 in the CCIW.
Jones scored seven goals and added in an assist in a record-setting showing as she broke the previous record held by Landry Elliott, Dani Engelbreit, Grainne Kelly, Lauren Pavich, and Claudia Richman. She also added a team-high eight draw controls, three ground balls, and a caused turnover.Â
Senior Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) stuffed the stat sheet with four goals and three assists to finish with seven points, while she caused a team-best three turnovers. Junior
Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) found the back of the net three times, while senior
Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-Resurrection Prep) added two goals and a team-best six ground balls.Â
Rounding out the scoring, junior Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) and sophomore
Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) totaled three points apiece on a goal and two assists. Sophomores
Carlyn Bratt (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) and
Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) scored one goal each, the first of their careers. Freshman
Britney Maldanado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Conant) also contributed a goal and an assist.
In goal, senior Janaye Godfrey (Portland, Ore.-Lincoln) and sophomore
Rebecca Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich Senior) made four saves each while splitting time between the posts.
IWU and NCC each scored in the opening two minutes, but an unassisted goal from Rooney quickly put the Titans in front 2-1.
The Titans kept the pressure on the Cardinals as Bratt scored off O'Malley's pass to up the IWU lead to 8-5 with 8:48 to go in the first half. Jones followed with back-to-back scores to up the advantage to five, 10-5.Â
North Central scored one more before the break, cutting Illinois Wesleyan's lead to 10-6 at the midpoint.
The Cardinals pulled within two, 13-11, on a pair of goals from Jessica Deetjen, but that was as close as they would come as the Green and White broke the game open.The Titans went on to score the game's next eight goals, to go up 21-11.
North Central added a goal with a minute to play, but IWU ran away victorious, 21-12.
Illinois Wesleyan will now turn its attention to the CCIW Tournament, with seeding set to be finalized tomorrow following Chicago's match at Augustana. The semifinals round will take place April 28, with the CCIW Championship game tabbed for May 1.Â
