Early Deficit Too Much for Women’s Lacrosse at No. 20 Denison

The Titans return to action tomorrow, March 7, at Wittenberg

GRANVILLE, Ohio. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team could not overcome an early deficit in a 17-9 loss at No. 20 Denison University Saturday, March 6.

Senior Janaye Godfrey (Portland, Ore.-Lincoln) tied her career-best in saves with 15 stops, including 13 in the first half, for the second straight game. Sophomore Rebecca Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich Senior) made her first appearance of the season, entering the game in the second half. She also tied her career-best in saves with 12.

The Titans were led by their upperclassmen in the setback. Senior Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles) put up two goals and two assists, junior Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) added three goals, and junior Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) and senior Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-ResurrectionPrep College) each scored two goals and put up one assist.

The Titans started off strong with an early goal by Torres putting IWU up 1-0 three minutes in, but DU scored eight unanswered goals. Torres slipped one past the Denison goalkeeper on a free position shot with under 10 minutes to go in the first half to make the score 8-2.

The Big Red put up three more goals to widen the gap to, 11-3, at halftime.

Denison's offense did not let up in the second half, as the Big Red came out of the break with three unanswered goals. After Godfrey saved a Big Red free position shot the Titans made their way past the DU defense where O'Malley put one in the back of the net from Elliot. The goal proved to be the start of a four-goal run for the Green and White, which cut the DU lead to 14-7.

Despite the late surge, the early deficit was too much to overcome for IWU as they dropped the game by a score of 17-9.

IWU returns to play tomorrow, March 7 to face Wittenberg University as they continue their Ohio stint. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET. The game will be live streamed here
