Balanced Attack Paired with Godfrey's Career Day Leads IWU Past Aurora

Janaye Godfery tied a career-high with 15 saves

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team used a balanced attack to hold off Aurora University Tuesday night, March 2, at Tucci Stadium. The Titans got goals from eight different players to claim a 9-7 victory over the Spartans in their season opener.

Leading the Titans offensively were senior Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles) and sophomore Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South). Rooney scored two  goals and added an assist, while Gleason scored once and assisted on two others.

Senior Janaye Godfrey (Portland, Ore.-Lincoln) was stout in goal, tying a career-high with 15 saves. Her 15 stops tied her career-best set in her IWU debut at Wittenberg, Feb. 24, 2018.

Junior Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) picked up a team-high four ground balls, while senior Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill. Resurrection Prep) led the team with four draw controls.

IWU and AU played to a 2-2 tie as the teams traded goals over the first nine minutes.

The score remained deadlocked at two all until Gleason buried a shot in the back of the net with 8:23 to go until the break. Junior Cassandra Jones' (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) goal 90 seconds later put the Green and White up 4-2 at halftime.

Aurora came out strong in the second half, scoring two goals in the first five minutes to even the score at 4-4 with 25 minutes to go.

Illinois Wesleyan responded with four unanswered goals to regain control. Freshman Darby Moore (St. Louis, Mo.-Metro) got things rolling with the first goal of her career, and O'Malley followed minutes later with a free position goal.

Junior Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) pushed the Titans' lead to three, 7-4, with 14:31 to play, while Gleason found Rooney for the score with 10:47 on the clock. Freshman Hannah Trousdale (Hoffman Eastates, Ill.-Hoffman Estates) later notched the first goal of her career, as Illinois Wesleyan led by as many four.

The Spartans made things interesting late, with three goals in the final three minutes to cut the IWU lead to two with 41 seconds left. O'Malley won the ensuing draw control and the Titans closed out the 9-7 victory.

IWU hits the road for a two-game stint in Ohio this weekend, March 6-7. The Titans take on Denison Saturday, March 6, and Wittenberg Sunday, March 7. Both game times are slated for 1 p.m. ET.
