Women's Volleyball's Hot Start Fades in Loss to Fifth-Ranked Firebirds

IWU falls to 1-2 on the season

KENOSHA, Wis. - A hot start was not enough for the Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team on the road against No. 5 Carthage College Wednesday night, March 17. IWU won the first set 25-21, but dropped back-to-back sets in extra points, 27-25 and 26-24, before falling 25-9 in the final set. With the loss, the Titans are now 1-2 on the season, while the Firebirds are 4-1.

Junior Amber Juarez (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal U High) registered a season-high 24 digs, along with four assists and an ace. Juniors Courtney McAuliffe (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) and Dana Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) tallied three-blocks apiece.

Offensively, five Titans finished with seven-or-more kills, led by freshman Maddie Dryfhout (Orland Park, Ill.-Chicago Christian) who registered 11. She also added eight digs. McAuliffe and Kiszkowski tallied eight each, and senior Jessica McCall (Wayne, Ill.-Wheaton St. Francis) and sophomore Grace Sanders (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) added seven apiece. McCall was credited with three aces and Sanders added 10 digs. 

Junior Madi Corey (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) led the Green and White with 23 assists. Senior Caitlin Meyer (Manteno, Ill.-Manteno) added 11 assists and eight digs in her first match of the season.

As a team, Illinois Wesleyan finished with 46 kills and a .115 attacking percentage. Carthage registered 54 kills on a .221 clip. The Firebirds held a slim 70-67 edge in digs, and recorded 11 aces to IWU's nine. 

Illinois Wesleyan remains on the road next weekend, March 24, when the Titans trek to Rock Island, Ill. for a match against Augustana College. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
