Godfrey sets career-high 18 saves

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team took down the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, 12-8, in a back and forth battle Saturday, March 13. The Titans moved to 3-1 on the season as the Falcons fell to 0-1 in its season opener.

Senior Janaye Godfrey (Portland, Ore.-Lincoln) took charge in the defensive half collecting a career-high of 18 saves in a single game. The senior goaltender also picked up six ground balls.

IWU was led offensively by senior Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-Resurrection Prep College) who tied her career-high with four goals. The Chicago, Ill. native won six draw controls and picked up two ground balls. Senior Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles) and juniors Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) and Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) each put up two goals apiece, while Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) and Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) rounded out the 12-goal tally with one each.

The Ttians started off the game fast as the first shot for IWU was a goal by Jones, edging IWU to a 1-0 lead. The Falcons answered with a goal from Emma Kholback, who went on to score four out of the eight goals for UW-River Falls during the game. Breaking the 1-1 tie was Elliott off of a free position goal putting the Titans up by one.

IWU scored back-to-back goals from Jones and Torres. After winning the draw, Torres blew by the Falcon defense for an unassisted goal, widening the Titan lead to 4-2 with 20 minutes to go in the first half. The two-goal lead remained into halftime, with the Titans holding a 7-5 advantage.

The Falcons started to close the gap in the second half, pulling within one, 9-8, with 15 minutes remaining. O'Malley responded with a goal, picking up the draw control and running through the Falcons putting one behind the UW-River Falls goaltender. Torres secured the lead with her career-tying fourth goal, widing the lead by two.

The Titans finished it out with two more goals to close out the 12-8 win.

The Titans are back at home tomorrow, March 14, to face Transylvania. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
