Titans Push Past Pioneers

IWU moved to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 at home.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team edged Transylvania University for a 10-9 victory over at Tucci Stadium Sunday, March 14. The Titans went 2-0 for its homestand weekend, as IWU advanced to 4-1 on the season.

Junior Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) led the Green and White collecting four points with two early goals and two assists. Junior Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) followed behind with three goals along with a game-high of five draw controls. Senior Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles) added one goal and two assists, while Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) added a goal and four draw controls. Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-Resurrection Prep College), Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South), and Darby Moore (St. Louis, Mo.-Metro), rounded out the scoring with one goal each.

Senior Janaye Godfrey (Portland, Ore.-Lincoln) tallied a total of 13 saves and seven ground balls, while freshman Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) and sophomore Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) picked up two ground balls apiece.

The Titans were put under pressure from the start as Transy managed to put up a goal after only one minute of play, in addition to a free position goal a few minutes later giving the Pioneers an early 2-0 lead. 

Elliott started off the scoring for IWU as she collected a goal putting the Titans on the board. The Milwaukee, Wis. native came in big for the Titans, scoring off a free position pass from Rooney, breaking the 2-2 tie and advancing the score to a 3-2 lead for IWU. Elliot's first goal kicked off a five-goal unanswered run, putting the Titans up 5-2. 

The Pioneers were able to put up two free position goals before the end of the half, while O'Malley tallied the sixth goal for the Titans, ending the half 6-4 with IWU in the lead. 

Only 16 seconds into the second half, Transy managed to score a quick goal. Gleason answered for the Titans with a free position goal to kick off a three-goal run resulting in a 9-5 lead for the Green and White. 

The Pioneers weren't done yet, scoring three unanswered goals, to make it 10-9 with five minutes remaining in the game. 

With the Pioneers still pressing, Godfrey made a big save from a shot within close range and denied two free position attempts, as IWU held off TU and collected the 10-9 win. 

Up next, the Titans hit the road to Minnesota to take on Hamline University Saturday March 20, for a 1 p.m. start and Augsburg University Sunday, March 21 for a 11 a.m. start.
