BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball travels to Gregory Arena for a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin bout with North Central College Saturday, Feb. 6. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Titans (0-1) began the season with a 90-82 setback to Millikin in a pop-up game Thursday night, Feb. 4. IWU was originally slated to play against NCC, but inclement weather squashed those plans, resulting in the Illinois Wesleyan-Millikin clash. Saturday will mark North Central's (0-4) return to the hardwood after a week-long hiatus. The Cardinals are in search of their first win of the season, most recently falling to Augustana, 57-51, Jan. 30.
Fans can tune into the game via live stats or live stream. Links on how to follow along can be found on the women's basketball schedule page of IWUsports.com.
THE THREE-0-9: The Titans knocked down 12-of-22 three-pointers in their game against Millikin, Feb. 4. IWU's 12 triples are the most in a game by a CCIW team this season. In fact, Illinois Wesleyan now leads the league in threes made per game and three-point field goal percentage (54.5).
IWU's barrage of triples came courtesy of Samantha Munroe, Brooke Lansford, and Kendall Sosa. Munroe went 5-for-7 from the long line, Lansford went 4-of-5, and Sosa finished 3-for-7. It marked the first time three Titans made at least three three-pointers apiece since the same trio did so in a win over Rose-Hulman, Nov. 30, 2019.
PICKING UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF: Senior Kendall Sosa picked up right where she left off, dropping a game-high 32 points in IWU's season opener versus Millikin, Feb. 4. The returning All-American hit 7-of-17 shots, including three triples, and went 15-for-17 at the charity stripe. Her 32 points are tied for 10th-most in IWU single-game history, while it was the sixth 30-point effort of her career.
Sosa has now scored at least 20 points in nine straight games, dating back to IWU's Feb. 12, 2020 game at Millikin.
MAKING THEM PAY: In a 15-for-17 effort at the free throw line against Millikin, Feb. 4, senior Kendall Sosa converted the third-most free throws in a single game in Illinois Wesleyan laurels. Sosa's 15 makes from the charity stripe are tied for third with Maddie Merritt, who accomplished the feat against North Central, Jan. 16, 2019.
THE 50TH YEAR OF IWU WOMEN'S HOOPS: Illinois Wesleyan, now in its 50th year of women's basketball, has compiled a 665-477 overall record. IWU's .582 all-time win percentage includes a 306-191 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin mark.
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE CARDINALS: Thursday's CCIW contest between the Titans and Cardinals will serve as the 87th chapter in a history that dates back 40 years. Despite North Central winning the first seven showdowns, including an 81-76 win in the initial meeting in 1979, Illinois Wesleyan leads the all-time series 48-29. Additionally, IWU is 36-10 against NCC under the direction of Mia Smith.
The Titans swept last season's series with the Cardinals. IWU topped NCC 94-49 at Gregory Arena, Dec. 4, 2019. Five players reached double-digit scoring in the game, with Katelyn Heller leading the way with 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting. IWU completed the sweep with a 90-63 win inside the Shirk Center, Feb. 19. Sydney Shanks paced IWU with 25 points and nine steals, while Kendall Sosa added 22 points.
THE DEAN OF THE CCIW: The 2020-21 season marks the 23rd year under the direction of Mia Smith, the longest tenured coach in the CCIW. Smith's 432 wins are the most among active CCIW coaches by more than 150. Additionally, Smith's 235 CCIW wins are the third-most in league history.
Under the tutelage of Smith, IWU has won eight CCIW Championships and made nine NCAA Tournament appearances. The Titans won the 2012 NCAA Division III Championship following a fourth-place finish in 2011.
MEET THE CAPTAINS: The Titans will be led by their four seniors this season, as Kendall Sosa, Samantha Munroe, Riley Brovelli, and Anna Lowis were named captains by Head Coach Mia Smith. It is the second straight season Sosa and Munroe will serve in the role, while Brovelli and Lowis will do so for the first time.
ON THE HORIZON: Illinois Wesleyan will remain on the road Tuesday, Feb. 9, when the Titans head to Decatur for a rematch with Millikin. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Griswold Center.
