Swimming and Diving Concludes Carthage Classic

Women finish in third, men sixth

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up the three-day Carthage Classic Saturday, Dec. 4. The women's team ended the classic in third place with a total of 1,591.50 points while the men remained in sixth place with a total of 783 points. Carthage College (2,500.50) and Lake Forest College (1,653) rounded out the top two, respectively for the women. For the men, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (2,632), Carthage College (2,099), and Lake Forest College (1,542) rounded out the top three. 

Senior Ellen Gilbert (Northbrook, Ill.-Glenbrook North) who placed first in the preliminary round in the women's 200 yard butterfly (2:09.06) secured her first place finish in the A final with a faster time of 2:07.33, a season-best. Gilbert is the only Titan who swam a first-place final time during the last day of the classic. 

Junior Lauren Feddersen (Champaign, Ill.-Centennial) grabbed herself a fourth place finish in the A final of the 400 yard individual medley, clocking in a time of 4:48.86. Senior Megan Wong (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) also got a top-five finish in the 200 yard freestyle, with a time of 1:59.17, a season-best earning her a fifth place finish overall. Feddersen and Wong also took home top-ten finishes in the 100 yard breaststroke. Junior Feddersen placed fifth in the A final (1:10.94) as Wong placed 10th (1:12.19). 

In the women's 100 yard backstroke sophomore Natalie Wajda (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) came out of the preliminary round with a season-best and first place time of 1:01.10. During the A final Wajda garnered an overall second place finish, with a better time of 1:00.42. Following close behind was freshman Hadley Fudge (Stanford, Ill.-University) with a third place finish touching in at 1:01.17.

For the third day in a row a women's relay team finished within the top three. In the 400 yard freestyle relay the grouping of Fudge, Hannah Murray (West Chicago, Ill.-St. Charles East), Wong, and Gilbert took home a second place finish, touching in at 3:39.47. 

On the men's side, in the A final of the 400 yard individual medley sophomore Lane Wagner (Danville, Ill.-Danville) represented the Green and White in the top 10 with a seventh place finish. Wagner touched in with a time of 4:22.92. The sophomore also picked up a seventh place finish in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.47. 

Senior Mason McCauley (Deerfield, Ill.-Deerfield) qualified for the B final during the preliminary round in the 200 yard butterfly to come out on top in his heat with a time of 1:59.47, a time faster than four swimmers in the A final. McCauley's time is the fastest 200 fly recorded time for the Green and White this season. 

Sophomore Ethan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) garnered a sixth place finish in the 50 yard freestyle with a season-best time of 21.57. Freshman Emily Marks (Cary, Ill.-Cary-Grove Community) clocked in a career-best time in the 50 yard freestyle, touching in at 25.57 earning a 10 place finish overall. 

The Titans return to action after the winter break for a non-conference duel with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Saturday, Jan. 8.
