Swim & Dive Combines for 19 Event Wins at Augie

Gilbert, Wong, McCauley, Kula with three wins each

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -
Seniors Ellen Gilbert (Northbrook, Ill.-Glenbrook North), Megan Wong (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township), and Mason McCauley (Deerfield, Ill.-Deerfield) and freshman Alex Kula (Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community) picked up three wins apiece as the Illinois Wesleyan University women's and men's swimming and diving teams battled Augustana College Saturday, Nov. 6. The women dropped the dual by a tight 140-134 margin, while the men's squad was defeated 150-128.


Gilbert won the 1000 freestyle, as well as the 100 and 200 butterfly. Wong bested the competition in the 100 free, 200 free, and 200 individual medley. McCauley picked up his victories in the 200 butterfly, 500 free, and 1000 free, while Kula's wins came in the 100 and 200 free, as well as the 100 fly. 

Gilbert touched in with a time of 10:51.62 in the 1000 free. She nabbed first in the 100 fly with a time of 59.70, and finished in 2:11.05 to win the 200 fly. 

Wong led a sweep of the top-three spots in the 100 free with her time of 55.50. Sophomore Hannah Murray (West Chicago, Ill.-St. Charles East) finished second (55.59), and freshman Emily Marks (Cary, Ill.-Cary-Grove) took third (55.64). She won the 200 free in a one-two finish for IWU. Wong clocked in at 2:00.15, while Murray was runner-up at 2:00.74. Wong's final win came in the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.69.

McCauley paced the men's team with his trio of wins. He headlined a one-two showing in the 1000 free, finishing in 9:58.25, with senior Jackson Rapala (Roselle, Ill.-Lake Park) on his heels in second (10:45.46). In the 500 free, he topped the field with a time of 4:52.35. Sophomore Henry Moore (Champaign, Ill.-Centennial) placed second (5:07.69) and Rapala was third (5:17.05).

Kula won the 200 free with a time of 1:49.95, and the 100 free with a mark of 49.80. He also claimed the top spot in the 100 fly, where he touched in with a time of 54.78. 

Sophomores Lane Wagner (Danville, Ill.-Danville), Ethan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), and Jack Troyer (Arlington Heights, Ill.-John Hersey) added wins for the men's team. Wagner claimed first in the 200 back (2:02.50) and placed second in the 200 IM (2:06.23). Lowder won the 50 freestyle, where he posted a time of 22.16, while Troyer won both diving events. On the 1-meter he scored 245.30, while he totaled 231.80 points on the 3-meter.

The women's team also saw freshman Hadley Fudge (Stanford, Ill.-University) and junior Lauren Feddersen (Champaign, Ill.-Centennial) secure individual wins. Fudge bested the field in the 200 backstroke (2:12.39), while Feddersen's win came in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.77).

Fudge, Feddersen, Gilbert, and Murray provided the Titans with a win in the 200 medley relay, where the Green and White bested Augie with a time of 1:52.46.

Fudge added a runner-up finish in the 100 back, touching in with a time of 1:00.97. Sophomore Natalie Wajda (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) took third in the race with a time of 1:03.37.

Illinois Wesleyan is off until the Titans return to the pool as hosts of the IWU Invite Saturday, Nov. 20. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. inside Fort Natatorium.
