Football Drops Road Game at No. 6 Wheaton

Titans close out season at home, Nov. 13, against Augie

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University football team was handed a 72-7 setback in its final road game of the season at No. 6 Wheaton College Saturday, Nov. 6. The Titans fell to 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while the Thunder (8-1, 7-1 CCIW) extended their win streak to seven.

Illinois Wesleyan finished with 173 yards of total offense, while Wheaton totaled 511. IWU recorded 207 passing yards, while the run game was held to -34. Wheaton's offensive production came via 278 rushing yards and 233 passing yards.

Sophomore Sage Shindler (Chicago, Ill.-Walter Payton) went 24-of-40 in the passing game for 168 yards. Senior Caleb Robinson (Brighton, Ill.-Southwestern) finished 6-for-7 for 39 yards and a touchdown. Senior Zack Tencza (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) and junior Charlie Hamilton (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) caught five passes apiece, while sophomore Seth Albin (Midlothian, Ill.-Oak Forest) finished with a team-high seven receptions, including a 19-yard touchdown pass.

Defensively, Illinois Wesleyan was led by senior Jack Dawson's (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) seven tackles. Senior Tyler Maple (Plainfield, Ind.-Plainfield) added five stops and an interception. Senior Skyler Metzger (Northbrook, Ill.-Glenbrook North) totaled five tackles, two for loss, and a sack, while senior Nicholas DeGregorio (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) also notched a sack.

Wheaton scored twice in a minute and 18 seconds to take control. After a blocked punt made way for a 10-yard touchdown run, a pick-six gave the Thunder 14-0 lead with 9:34 left in the opening quarter. 

Wheaton scored twice more in the first and added four scores in the second period to take a 48-0 halftime lead. 

Illinois Wesleyan broke the shutout on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Robinson to Albin late in the fourth quarter. The touchdown pass proved to be the final points for either side as the Titans fell, 72-7.

The Green and White close out the 2021 campaign Saturday, Nov. 13, when IWU hosts Augustana College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Tucci Stadium, with Senior Day festivities to be held prior.
