Football’s Senior Day Spoiled by Augie

Titans finish season with 3-7 record, go 3-6 in CCIW

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University football team had its Senior Day spoiled by Augustana College, 38-14, Saturday afternoon at Tucci Stadium, Nov. 13. With the loss, IWU finished the season with a 3-7 record, including a 3-6 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin record. Augustana evened its record to 5-5 (4-5).

Illinois Wesleyan spotted Augie a 24-0 lead, forcing the Titans to play from behind early.

The Green and White pieced together a 10-play, 74-yard drive, to cut the deficit to 24-7 at halftime. Sophomore Sage Shindler (Chicago, Ill.-Walter Payton) connected with junior wideout Charlie Hamilton (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) on a 32-yard touchdown pass across the middle to put the Titans on the board with 2:45 to play in the opening half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Augie struck twice to expand its lead to 38-7. A 50-yard touchdown pass finished off a seven-play, 80-yard drive, and a two-yard scamper finished off the Vikings' scoring.

Setup by a 46-yard kickoff return from freshman Melchizedek Woodson (St. Louis, Mo.-Ladue Horton Watkins), the Titans found the endzone late in the fourth. Shindler aired out a 42-yard pass to Hamilton on second down to give IWU first-and-goal. Senior Anthony Marre (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Glenbard North) took it from there, fighting his way for a four-yard score.

Marre's touchdown proved to be the final score by either team, as Augustana recovered Illinois Wesleyan's onside kick attempt and ran out the clock.

The Green and White finished with 304 yards of total offense, as Shindler completed 25-of-46 passes for 252 yards. IWU finished with 52 rushing yards, 39 of which came from Marre. Hamilton hauled in a team-high seven passes for 125 yards and a touchdown, while senior Wesley Watson (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) caught six catches for 41 yards.

Seniors Daniel Gibbons (Elmhurst, Ill.-IC Catholic Prep) and Jack Dawson (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) paced the Titan defense. Gibbons made a game-high 11 stops, four solo and seven assisted, while Dawson added eight stops, including one for loss. Freshmen Frank Roti (Orland Hills, Ill.-Andrew) and Sam Schott (West Lafayette, Ind.-West Lafayette) tallied seven tackles each. Schott also had team-high three pass breakups.

IWU celebrated its senior class prior to the contest, as the group played in their final game of their careers.
