ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
The Illinois Wesleyan University women's and men's swimming and diving teams began their 2021-22 campaigns against Lewis University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis at Lewis Pool Friday night, Oct. 22. The women battled both Division II foes tight, but fell to Lewis 139-120, and UMSL 159-100. The men dropped to Lewis, 219-37, and UMSL by a 210-45 tally.

On the women's side, Illinois Wesleyan recorded five wins. Senior Ellen Gilbert (Northbrook, Ill.-Glenbrook North) earned two, while senior Megan Wong (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township), sophomore Natalie Wajda (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South), and freshman Hadley Fudge (Stanford, Ill.-University) added one apiece.

Gilbert claimed first in the 100 and 200 butterfly, doing so in convincing fashion. Gilbert clocked in with a time of 2:10.71 in the 200, besting her Division II opposition by nearly 10 seconds, before winning the 100 fly with a time of 59.21.

Fudge put together a strong collegiate debut with three top-three finishes, highlighted by a win in the 100 individual medley. Fudge won the 100 IM with a time of 1:01.63, just barely edging Lewis' Larissa Alves (1:01.91). She was second in the 200 backstroke (2:12.56) and notched a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.21).

Sophomore Hannah Murray (West Chicago, Ill.-St. Charles East) placed second in the 100 free (56.08) and third in the 50 free (25.75). Wong came in right behind her in the 100 free, touching in with a third-place time of 56.43.

Murray, Wajda, Wong, and Gilbert also teamed up for third-place finish in the 200 free relay. The Titans posted a time of 1:42.57.

Senior Mason McCauley (Deerfield, Ill.-Deerfield) and sophomore Ethan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) paced the men's team with a pair of top-five finishes. McCauley grabbed a second-place finish in the 500 free, while Lowder clocked in at 22.03 to earn fourth in the 50 free.
