Box Score ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team dropped a tight game to Westfield State University Monday night, March 9, in the Titans first game at the SpringFling in Englewood, Fla. IWU (2-4) trailed by one at the half, but could not overcome the deficit in a 16-12 setback.
Illinois Wesleyan took a 7-4 lead midway through the first half, but Westfield State (3-1) closed the period with four straight goals to take an 8-7 lead at the break. In the second half, WSU scored two quick goals to take control 10-7. The Titans pulled within two on a free position shot at the 23:48 mark, but the Owls responded with back-to-back goals to thwart IWU's comeback attempt.Â
Sophomore
Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) led the Titans with six goals, while junior
Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-Ressurection Prep), sophomore
Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant), and junior
Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) recorded two apiece. Torres also added a team-best three assists in the loss. Defensively, junior
Janaye Godfrey (Hillsboro, Ore.-Lincoln) made nine saves.
As a team, the Titans recorded 22 shots to the Owls' 29. IWU went 10-for-11 in clear attempts, and WSU finished 13-for-14. Illinois Wesleyan committed 17 turnovers, while Westfield State was credited with just six in the contest.
The Titans finish up their time in the Sunshine State Wednesday night, March 11, against Nazareth College. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
