BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The 2020 season begins with a trip to Memphis, Tenn. this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 21-22, for the No. 20 Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team. IWU will open the season against No. 15/17 Colorado College Saturday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. ET, before tangling with Rhodes College at 12 p.m. ET Sunday, Feb. 22.
Illinois Wesleyan, who was the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin regular season and postseason tournament champion in 2019, won a season-record number of games and finished with an 18-3 record. The Titans advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament, appearing in the national tournament for the third straight year.
Junior all-region selections Riley Rooney (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) and
Janaye Godfrey (Hilsboro, Ore.-Lincoln) return for the Titans, along with eight other letterwinners. Rooney was second on the team with 53 goals and 78 points last year, while Godfrey made 145 saves and compiled a 7.69 goals against average.
IWU will clash with Colorado College for the third straight season Saturday. The Tigers, who are slotted 15th in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Top-20 and 17th in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Preseason Poll, hold a 2-0 lead in the all-time series. Most recently CC topped Illinois Wesleyan, 17-8, in Colorado Springs, Colo. March 15, 2019.Â
Rhodes enters the weekend 1-0 on the season following a 20-3 thumping of Southwestern, Feb. 9. The Lynx will begin the round-robin with a Friday tilt against Colorado College at 3 p.m. ET, before squaring off with the Titans for the fifth time since 2017. Rhodes holds a 3-1 edge in the all-time tally, but Illinois Wesleyan won the last battle, 19-16, in Louisville, Ky., Feb. 17, 2019. Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) led the Titans with four goals, while four other plays tallied three goals each.
