DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team extended their winning-streak to nine games on Saturday, April 28 with a 20-4 victory over University of Dubuque in their regular season finale. This is currently the longest winning-streak in program history, improving upon the previous high of seven set during the 2017 season.
With a win Illinois Wesleyan concludes the regular season with a record of 13-4 overall and 6-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). University of Dubuque fell to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the CCIW with a loss.
Senior
Abby Kushina and junior
Grainne Kelly led the team in points with seven apiece. Kushina scored two goals and assisted on five while Kelly scored five times and assisted twice. Kelly finished 3-for-4 on free-position shot attempts.
Freshman
Janaye Godfrey improved to 10-3 in net this season for IWU allowing two goals and making four saves. Senior
Claire Quist spelled Godfrey in the second half allowing two goals and making two saves. Kaley Weir was the losing goalkeeper on Saturday allowing 20 goals and making 18 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Illinois Wesleyan opened the game on an 8-0 tear that included back-to-back man-down goals from senior Mariah Smith and junior Dani Engelbreit.
- After Dubuque goals from Breann Tjaarda and Claire Carlson, Illinois Wesleyan ended the half on a 4-0 run to take a 13-2 lead into halftime.
- Grainne Kelly scored four of her five goals in the first half of action.
- The Titan defense held Dubuque scoreless for the first 24 minutes of the second half until Tjaarda scored the final two goals of the game.
- Illinois Wesleyan led by as many as 18 goals (20-2) in the second half following a goal from Kushina at the nine minute mark.
SIGNIFICANT STATISTICS:
- Illinois Wesleyan out-shot the Spartans 43-11 overall and 38-10 in shots on goal.
- Dubuque committed 32 turnovers to just 14 for the Titans.
- IWU finished 15-of-16 on clearance attempts compared to 10-of-16 for Dubuque.
- Illinois Wesleyan won 17 draw controls compared to nine for the Spartans and were led by Smith who won a game-high six.
