IWU Hoop Teams Look to Wrap Up Outright CCIW Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Both the Illinois Wesleyan women's and men's basketball teams look to claim outright College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships with wins Tuesday, Feb. 20. The IWU men host North Central while the women's team travels to play Elmhurst. Both tip-offs are at 7 p.m.

CCIW TOURNAMENTS: If IWU hosts both men and women CCIW tournaments, it would be the first time it has ever occurred ... The women's field is set with IWU, Wheaton, Carthage and Elmhurst ...The men's field is also set with IWU, Augustana, North Central and Wheaton...The women's semifinals would be Thursday and the men's semis on Friday. Both title games are Saturday with the women at 2 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m. ... The CCIW women's tournament has gone on for 15 seasons, started in 2003, while the men's tournament has taken place since 2006 (12 years) ... The tournament champions receive the league's automatic bids into the NCAA Division III tournament.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

"WHITE OUT" NIGHT: Illinois Wesleyan fans are encouraged to wear white as part of a "White Out" promotion to support the Titans.

CCIW TITLES: Illinois Wesleyan (19-5, 12-3 CCIW) earned a share of its 30th overall CCIW championship with the win Saturday at Carthage. It is IWU's first CCIW title since 2014 and the Titans can get its 24th outright men's basketball title with a win vs. North Central (17-7, 10-5 CCIW).

TITAN NOTES: In D-III, Brady Rose is 34th in scoring (21.6 ppg), 45th with 380 field goal tries and 57th in field goals made (179). Rose is 40th all-time at IWU with 1058 career points...Of 416 teams in Division III stats, IWU is 33rd with 10.0 3-pointers per game and 17th with a 1.42 assist/turnover ratio. The Titans are 10th with just 10.7 turnovers per game...IWU has a 3-pointer in 626 straight games (D-III record) dating back to an 86-76 win at North Park on Jan. 28, 1996.

3-POINT RANKINGS: Brady Rose is No. 9 all-time at IWU with 144 3-pointers. Four other current Titans rank in the top 45 in career 3-pointers made. They are:
#23. 87 - Colin Bonnett (75 games) - 2015-18
#35. 67 - Nick Coleman (45 games) - 2015-18
#38. 57 - Jaylen Beasley (84 games) - 2014-18
#42. 50 - Zach Knobloch (24 games) - 2017-18

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: After losing to IWU on Dec. 9, the Cardinals won nine straight and 13 of 14 ...North Central is 2nd in the country with a 1.76 assist/turnover ratio, 6th with 19.5 assists per game and 11th in 30-point accuracy (.403). Connor Raridon is 5th in D-III with 6.8 assists per game.

COACHES: In his 12th season at IWU, Ron Rose has a 225-108 overall mark (.675) with a 109-60 CCIW ledger. He is third in wins at IWU, behind Dennie Bridges (667-319, 1965-01) and Jack Horenberger (264-212, 1945-65) ... In his 14th season at NCC, Todd Raridon has a 242-132 overall record (119-80 CCIW). Assistant coach Steve Schweer (IWU '06) played on two NCAA Sweet 16 teams and on IWU's 2006 Final 4 squad.

THE SERIES: Dating back to 1920, IWU leads the series vs. NCC, 116-43. North Central has won 10 of the last 15 and had won four straight before the IWU 68-66 win in Naperville on Dec. 9.

HOME COOKING: Illinois Wesleyan is 8-3 at home this year and has a 22-year Shirk Center record of 259-47 (.847) ... In the past six years (2009-17), IWU is 99-18 at home.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

TONIGHT'S GAME: A win over the Bluejays will give the Titans their first outright conference title since 2012, the year they also won the NCAA Division III national championship ... With the win on Saturday at Carthage, the Titans clinched at least a share of the CCIW regular season conference title, the eighth in program history. Illinois Wesleyan was previously the regular season champion in 2003, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and in 2016 (shared with Wheaton).
 
TITAN TALLIES: Senior Rebekah Ehresman was named CCIW "Women's Basketball Player of the Week" on Feb. 19 … Illinois Wesleyan is No. 16 in the D3hoops.com poll for Feb. 19 ... As a team, IWU is No. 4 nationally of 450 D-III teams in scoring offense (85.0 points per game), No. 2 in assist/turnover ratio, No. 10 in field-goal percentage, and No. 6 in turnover margin ... The Titans are seventh in margin of victory (23.7) ... Senior Molly McGraw has 1,483 career points, ranking No. 2 in Titan records. She is No. 3 all-time in shots made (582) ... Ehresman has 1,181 career points, which is No. 13 in IWU records. Also in school records, she ranks No. 1 in steals (287), No. 3 in assists (348) and No. 14 in rebounds (572) ... Ehresman is No. 2 nationally in assist/turnover ratio (3.63) ... Junior Maddie Merritt's .842 career free throw percentage is the best in an IWU uniform (277-of-329) ... Junior Nina Anderson tops the CCIW in 3-point percentage at .452 (38-of-84) this season.
 
STOLEN GOODS: On the back of Ehresman's 3.37 steals per game, IWU ranks No. 13 nationally in steals per game with 14.5 ... Among top 25 teams, the Titans rank second in steals behind 12th-ranked Christopher Newport. With 81 steals on the season, Ehresman trails Illinois Wesleyan's single-season steals record holder, Christina Solari (2009-10) by seven steals ... With 287 career steals to date, Ehresman is the program leader in steals.

FROM DEEP: During the conference season, junior Nina Anderson has made a league-leading 2.53 3-pointers per game in addition to leading the conference in 3-point percentage at .452 in CCIW games ... As a junior Anderson is having her best shooting season to date shooting .455 from the field, an increase from a .359 performance as a sophomore.
 
BEHIND ENEMY LINES:  With an overall record of 13-11 on the season, Elmhurst heads into Tuesday's game following a 60-58 victory over North Park … Prior to defeating the Vikings, Elmhurst had dropped three straight in CCIW competition. The Bluejays rank No. 85 in scoring offense nationally with 69.5 points per game and No. 261 in scoring defense allowing 64.5 points per. Two-time CCIW "Player of the Week" Mikaela Eppard averages 18.0 points and 10.8 rebounds per game for the Bluejays … Eppard ranks No. 21 in D-III in field goal percentage (.551) and No. 32 in total double-doubles with 13 on the season. Kaela Jones is second on the team in scoring (11.7) and rebounding (6.0). Jasmin Bailey is the team's top 3-point threat with 60 made triples on 161 attempts (.373).

THE SERIES:  Dating back to 1981, Illinois Wesleyan holds a 53-16 series advantage over Elmhurst which includes seven wins in their last 10 meetings. On January 6, the Titans defeated Elmhurst from the Shirk Center by a final score of 87-61.

HOME COURT: IWU has a 217-70 record at the Shirk Center and, since 2008, IWU has a home record of 100-26 (.792).
 
COACHES: Illinois Wesleyan's Mia Smith is in her 20th season and has an overall record of 385-162 (.702) with a CCIW mark of 209-74 (.736) ... In her 11 season as a Bluejay, Tethnie Carrillo holds an overall record of 113-125 with a conference record of 61-73.
 
TOURNAMENT TALK: At a site and date to be determined following Tuesday's game, Illinois Wesleyan will make their 14th appearance in the CCIW tournament. If IWU defeats Elmhurst on the Tuesday, the Titans will turn around and face the Bluejays at home in the first round of the tournament. A loss on Tuesday would see the Titans slip to the No. 2 seed where they would face Carthage College at Wheaton in round one.
