GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Illinois Wesleyan senior guard
Brady Rose scored half of his team's points, going for 34 in a 68-62 win over Calvin College on Friday, Nov. 16, at the Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Rose, whose career-high is 35 points, helped the Titans to a 2-0 record as he made 11 of 19 field goal tries including five of seven from 3-point range, and sank seven of eight free throw efforts.
Senior
Colin Bonnett added 10 points for Illinois Wesleyan, who took the lead at 7-5 on an
Alex O'Neill basket with 15:42 to go in the first half, and led the remainder of the way. The Titans' largest advantage was 15 points, the latest at 33-18 with 4:57 to play in the half.
The Knights chipped away at that lead to close to within three at 33-30 with 2:23 to play before halftime, when the Titans went to the locker room with a 36-32 lead.
Calvin trailed by 12 at 51-39 before staging a 22-11 run to close to within one point at 62-61 with 90 seconds left. But the Titans closed out the game with two O'Neill free throws with 1:06 to play, a Rose basket with 42 seconds remaining and two Rose free throws with 16 seconds left.
For the game, IWU shot .424 from the field (25 of 59) and made nine of 16 3-pointers (.563) with nine of 15 free throws (.600). The Knights shot .393 from the floor, made six of 19 treys (.316) and eight of 10 free throws.
Sophomore
Charlie Bair led IWU with 10 rebounds as the Titans held a 39-34 edge on the boards.
Thad Shymanski and Jason Walter each scored 15 to lead the Knights (1-1).
What's Next?
The Titans continue play in Michigan to face Alma College at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 17. The Scots lost their season-opener 85-74 to visiting Augustana College on Friday night.
