BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- After a more than two hour lightning delay at the start of the game, the No. 18-ranked Illinois Wesleyan football team went to two overtime possessions to earn a 40-34 win over Carthage College on Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 6, at Tucci Stadium.
The win keeps IWU unbeaten in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin at 4-0 and 4-1 overall while the Red Men are 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the CCIW.
IWU junior quarterback
Brandon Bauer tied a school single game record with 34 completions in 55 attempts for 361 yards with two TD throws, including the 4-yard game-winner to junior wide receiver
Jack Healy on the second overtime possession.
Doug Moews previously had 34 completions against Wheaton on Oct. 7, 1987.
Bauer's 55 attempts is third most in an IWU game and the 361 passing yards is seventh most.
Healy led Bauer's receiving corps with 11 grabs for 141 yards with junior wide receiver
Dean Zigulich collecting nine balls for 93 yards and a score and junior running back
Bryce Dooley making nine catches for 77 yards. Dooley also threw a 9-yard halfback pass to Bauer.
Senior
Morgan Alexander rushed 24 times for 27 total yards and remains No. 19 all-time in IWU rushing yards with 1,496.
Kicker
Patrick Tata also tied a school record with four field goals - 30 yards, 27 yards, 33 yards and a 37-yarder in the first overtime possession.
The Titans amassed 401 yards of total offense with 370 coming in the air and 31 on the ground while the Red Men, who scored 21 fourth quarter points to rally from a 23-10 deficit after three periods, gained a total of 424 yards with 241 via the pass and 183 rushing.
Defensively, junior defensive back
Trevor Koepke had nine total tackles with two pass breakups and sophomore linebacker
Keenan Scott had eight total tackles. Senior lineman
Eric Dubose had seven total tackles with two quarterback sacks accounting for 19 yards of loss. Junior lineman
Dave Lux also made a quarterback sack for -8 yards.
Three Titans had interceptions - senior linebacker
Andrew Ostrowski, senior safety
Trevor Staley and junior
Nico Gubenko, who also recovered a Carthage fumble.
Lafayette McGary had 111 rushing yards to key the Red Men and quarterback Billy Dury completed 20 of 37 for 235 yards and three TDs, two to Bret Patton and one to Evan French, who finished with nine receptions for 139 yards.
What's Next?
The Titans take on Elmhurst College at home next Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. The Bluejays are 1-4 overall and 0-4 against CCIW opponents after a 23-10 home field loss to Washington U. Saturday.
