Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Senior Sean Coonan pitched his first career shutout and second career complete game in the opener and IWU held off a late rally in game two to claim a doubleheader sweep of Carthage College at Horenberger Field on Saturday, April 1.

The Titans improved to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season-openers while the Red Men slipped to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Coonan (2-0) struck out eight and walked none while allowing six hits in six separate innings.

Senior catcher Pat Mollo had two of the Titans' six hits and collected a run batted in along with junior second baseman Gino Cavalieri and freshman centerfielder Nick Figus. Two of IWU's three runs were unearned as the Red Men committed costly errors in the first and fifth innings.

In game two, IWU rallied from a 2-1 deficit to score a single run in the sixth to tie the game and two more in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. Freshman first baseman Garrett Shea, who had IWU's only extra base hit with a second inning double, and junior third baseman Jake Stewart each had two hits in the eight-hit Titan attack and runs batted in came from Stewart, senior shortstop Jarrod Juskiewicz and sophomore leftfielder John Bosco.

Junior righthander Matt Banaitis (1-0) got the win in relief of senior starter Jonathan Vlk. Banaitis went 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts after Vlk had gone the first six, allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Sophomore Nick Brune picked up his first save, striking out two hitters with two hit batsmen in between. Brune's final strikeout left the bases loaded as the Red Men stranded 14 in the game.
