IWU Women's Lacrosse Falls Short in Double OT, 8-7

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- After coming back from a 5-1 deficit in the first half, the Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team fell short in double overtime against Pomona-Pitzer College by a final score of 8-7 on Sunday, March 12.

With a loss the Titans fell to 2-3 on the season while the Sage Hens improved to 3-4 overall with the win.

Pomona-Pitzer converted early and often in the first half, scoring the first five goals of the game. Sophomore Grainne Kelly got things started for IWU with a goal at the 6:31 mark in the first half. Kelly was one of three Titans to score two goals on Sunday.

IWU outscored the Sage Hens 6-2 in the second half to knot the game up at seven heading into the first overtime. Sophomore's Sara Dust and Sam Bidlack each added two goals in the second half. Bidlack scored her second goal of the half with just 46 seconds remaining in the contest to tie the game. Sophomore Dani Engelbreit was the only other goal scorer for the Titans with one.

The overtime periods were closely contested with the game-winning goal coming in the final seconds of the second overtime.

Junior Abby Kushina led the team with two assists, while Kelly and Engelbreit each added one. Junior Claire Quist saved 12 shots which was good for a .600 save percentage.

In total the Titans were outshot 28-19 and were bested in total ground balls 19-18.

What's Next?
The Titans continue their spring trip to California on Wednesday, March 15 with a game against Chapman University at 7 p.m. PT. Chapman currently holds and overall record of 3-1, including a 15-5 victory over Pomona-Pitzer in their season-opener.
