ORANGE, Calif. -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team defeated Chapman University on Wednesday, March 15 by a final score of 10-9. Senior
Maggie Krause completed her hat-trick with 3:37 to play, scoring the game-winning goal and giving IWU a 10-8 lead.
With a win the Titans improved their record to 3-3 on the season while Chapman fell to 5-2 overall.
In addition to the three goals from Krause, the Titans got two goals from each of junior
Abby Kushina, and sophomore'sÂ
Grainne Kelly and
Sara Dust. Krause also led the team with two assists and earned five points on the evening.
Junior goalkeeper
Claire Quist made nine saves in the winning effort, which featured a shot on goal advantage for the Panthers of 18-13. On the side of Chapman, goalkeeper Tara Sonnemaker made just three saves on 13 shots on goal.
IWU bested Chapman 40-33 on ground balls, led by Quist who tallied seven. Krause, Kelly and junior
Mariah Smith each recorded five ground balls in the winning effort.
Despite being out-shot 22-21, the Titans recorded 12 draw controls to nine for the Panthers. Smith led the Titans with six draw controls on Wednesday night.
For Chapman, senior Kelsey Mackin led the team with four goals on 11 shot attempts.
What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan plays at University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif., at 7 p.m. PT on Friday, March 17. The Bulldogs are 5-2 having won four straight, with recent wins over Pomona-Pitzer and Berry College.
