BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - For the first time this season, the Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team lost at home with a 16-2 defeat coming at the hands of Augustana in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener for both teams at Tucci Stadium on Saturday, April 9.
The Titans drop to 10-2 overall and 0-1 in the CCIW while the reigning CCIW champion Vikings improved to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.
Augustana jumped out to a quick start, scoring a mere 12 seconds into the game, tacking on seven more to score the first eight goals of the game. Illinois Wesleyan got on the scoreboard at the 15:27 mark in the first half when
Maggie Krause scored her 19th goal of the year. The Vikings scored twice more before halftime while the Titans added one.
In the second half, Augustana's suffocating defense kept IWU in check, allowing just two shots let off by the Titans while scoring six goals of their own to pick up the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Claire Quist lost for only the second time this season, falling to 9-2 while making 13 saves.
Freshman
Sam Bidlack was the only other player for Illinois Wesleyan to record a goal in the game, as the Titans were limited to only eight shots total.
Augustana held a 12-8 advantage on draw controls in addition to a 23-15 advantage on ground balls.
What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan will have a week to regroup before traveling to Dubuque, Iowa to take on the University of Dubuque in a 1 p.m. CCIW contest on Saturday, April 16. The Spartans are 8-2 this season after winning their conference opener against Carroll 16-3 on Saturday.
