BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- A goal by sophomore
Clarke Rich with 1:39 remaining gave the Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team a win over DePauw at Tucci Stadium on Wednesday, March 2.
The Titans improoved to 3-0 this season while DePauw's record is now 1-1.
Rich, freshman
Grainne Kelly and senior
Lauren Pavich each accounted for two goals while
Noelle Letourneau and
Abby Kushina each added one tally. Pavich also had three assists and freshman
Dani Engelbreit and sophomore
Sophia Sodolski each had an assist.
Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Pavich and two from Kelly. But the Tigers stormed back and held a 6-4 lead at halftime. The Titans tied the game at 6-6 on back-to-back goals by Letourneau and Rich and after Emma Flynn put DePauw up 7-6, Pavich found the back of the net with 12:16 remaining to tie the game at 7-7.
Flynn finished with four goals to lead DePauw.
With help from a stingy defense, sophomore goalkeeper
Claire Quist turned in a brilliant performance, making nine saves in 60 minutes.
Each team had 19 total shots and 16 shots on goal but DePauw was guilty of 23 turnovers compared to 19 for IWU and the Titans collected 23 ground balls to 10 for the Tigers.
What's Next?Illinois Wesleyan plays on the road at Adrian College in Adrian, Mich., on Sunday, March 6. Gametime is 1 p.m. Eastern time ... The Bulldogs are 0-2 after losses to Sewanee (18-6) and Birmingham Southern (15-12).
NOTES: Illinois Wesleyan gets a measure of satisfaction from the win in 2016. IWU was handled by DePauw, 24-8, last April 1 in Greencastle, Ind.
