Late Field Goal Gives Titans 13-10 Win Over Elmhurst

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- A 20-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining by senior Andrew Iwaszkiewicz was the margin of victory as the Illinois Wesleyan football team beat Elmhurst 13-10 on "Seniors' Day" at IWU's Tucci Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 29.

The Titans improved to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Bluejays are 4-4 overall and 3-3 against the league.

Senior Maurice Shoemaker-Gilmore closed in on a single-season rushing record as he gained 170 yards on 24 carries and now has 1,075 yards in 2016 (180 carries). The season record is 1,079 by Kurt Swearingen in 1977 (223 carries).

The Titans had the upper hand statistically in the game, gaining 365 yards of total offense (199 rushing, 166 passing) to 158 for the Bluejays (44 rushing, 114 passing). The Titans had the ball for 33:25 in the game compared to 26:35 for Elmhurst.

Iwaszkiewicz opened the scoring with a 29-yard field goal with 8:49 to play in the first quarter and IWU's only other points came with 10:39 to play in the first half when freshman Brandon Bauer connected with freshman Jack Healy on a 35-yard TD pass. Iwaszkiewicz added the extra point and IWU led 10-0 at intermission.

The Bluejays' Jawan Gaines returned the second half opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and Blake Bailey booted the extra point at the 14:46 mark of the third. Bailey kicked a 41-yard field goal with 9:39 left in the third that tied the issue at 10-10 until the game-winner with 11 seconds remaining.

Bauer, who was sacked three times, finished 13-of-26 for 166 yards and the one TD. Junior Brian Johnson made five receptions for 70 yards and Dominic Comfort had four catches for 40 yards.

Defensively, IWU was led by the 10 tackles of senior linebacker Sean Garvey with quarterback sacks coming from Kyle Venhuizen, Jordan Hassan and a -10 yard sack by sophomore Eric Dubose.
