Titan Volleyball Loses Twice in Texas Tourney

BELTON, Texas -- The Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team lost a pair of three-set matches on Saturday, Sept. 5, in the University of Mary Hardin Baylor Tournament in Belton, Texas.

The Titans, now 2-2, lost to Southwestern (4-0) by scores of 25-27, 22-25, 21-25, and lost to the University of Texas at Dallas (4-1) by scores of 12-25, 20-25, 24-26.

"Today we struggled finding consistency," said IWU head coach Kim Nelson-Brown. "We have a lot of potential with this team so I'm encouraged about where we are and what lies ahead.  For now, we just have to get back to the gym and work on some weaknesses."

Against Southwestern, who was among teams receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III preseason poll, IWU got 12 kills from sophomore Kyleigh Block and 11 kills and 10 digs from freshman Tyler Brown.
Sophomore Maisy Bowden led the Titans with four blocks and senior Mary Rankin paced the team with 25 digs. Freshman Leah Seielstad had 18 set assists and junior Colleen Rynne had 16.

In the match vs. UT-Dallas, Block led the way with 15 kills, 15 digs and two blocks. Bowden added eight blocks and sophomore Anne Cummings had seven.
Freshman Anna Clausen also had two blocks.
Rankin made 13 digs while Seielstad and Brown each had 11 digs. Seielstad had 23 set assists and Rynne had 18.

What's Next?
IWU plays next against Transylvania at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, in the first of three games for the Titans in the nine-team Barker Chevrolet Classic I at the Shirk Center.
