Baseball Splits Pair in Gateway City Games

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team got 26 hits in two games and split the contests, topping Concordia Chicago, 12-8, before losing a 13-5 decision at Webster University on Sunday, March 22 in the St. Louis area.

The Titans have a record of 8-4 while Concordia is now 6=9 and Webster is 10-5.

Surviving a game against Concordia Chicago in which they made five errors and allowed seven unearned runs, Illinois Wesleyan had some big scoring innings, jumping out with five runs in the first inning and tacking on three in both the sixth and seventh. The game was played at the Washington U. baseball field.
 
All nine starting players got base hits for IWU in a 15-hit attack. Leftfielder Adam Glogovsky had three hits while sophomore catcher Pat Mollo, junior first baseman Matthew Mardis, shortstop Jarrod Juskiewicz (two doubles) and freshman third baseman Gino Cavalieri each had two hits.
 
Starting hurler Kyle Snedeker (1-0) pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed three unearned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking four. Xander Horwitz and Louis Acklin also pitched in relief.
 
Against Webster in a game at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., IWU trailed 11-2 after four innings and got two in the sixth and one in the eighth in a comeback try. Mardis and Glogovsky had three hits each in the 11-hit offensive effort with Glogovsky hitting a double and a home run for two runs batted in. Freshman designated hitter Josh Kuntz also had two hits.
 
Freshman Harley Miller (0-1) was the starting pitcher and lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout.

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan opens College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play on Saturday (March 28) with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Elmhurst College (4-4).
