Titans Get 84-61 Win Over Wilmington


BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Senior Bryce Dolan scored 19 points and junior Trevor Seibring had 15 points and seven rebounds to pace the Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team to an 84-61 win over Wilmington in the Holiday Inn Express West Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Shirk Center.

The No. 24-ranked Titans improved to 2-1 while the Quakers slipped to 0-2. Illinois Wesleyan will face Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the tournament title game on Sunday at 4 p.m.

IWU held a commanding 42-27 rebounding lead and shot .574 from the field (31 of 54) while limiting Wilmington to a .361 shooting mark (22 of 61) and only .323 in the second half (10 of 31). The Quakers never found the range from beyond the arc, firing only 24 percent (6 of 25).

Wilmington led the game for 8:58 and that lead held up through the early part of the game as the Quakers led by as many as six on three occasions, including 18-12 with 12:17 before the half. IWU got a Dolan 3-pointer to take a 19-18 lead at the10:28 mark and Wilmington led for the last time at 24-23 with 5:51 to go before the Titans went on a 17-9 run to close out the period and led 40-33 at halftime. IWU then topped Wilmington 44-28 in the final period of the game that had two ties and three lead changes. IWU outscored the Quakers, 42-24 in the paint and led the game for 29:22.

Junior Andy Stempel also scored in double figures with 12 points and senior co-captain Brian Nelms handed out a team-high five assists.

ROSE-HULMAN 81, FONTBONNE 61: In the first game, Rose-Hulman placed four starters in double figures to defeat Fontbonne, 81-61. Junior Matt Loesing led the balanced attack with 15 points and junior Dillon Reynolds scored 12 points. Senior Jimmy Miller recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and senior Tyler Duffy added 10 points. Bryce Zimmerman led Fontbonne with 11 points off the bench and Tyler Williams scored 10 points for the Griffins.

NOTES: In a series dating back to 1917, IWU has a 7-1 record vs. Rose-Hulman but the schools have not met since the 1997-98 season ... IWU beat Rose-Hulman, 54-53, in the NCAA tournament at the Shirk Center en route to the 1997 national title. The Engineers' coach at the time was Jim Shaw, who passed away Nov. 10. Shaw retired as men's basketball coach in 2014 after 20 years, winning 303 games with a .578 winning percentage, six NCAA Division III tournament appearances, five regular season conference tournament titles, four conference tournament championships, five conference "Coach of the Year" awards, and four seasons of 20 or more wins.
