IWU Men Hang On for 10-Point Win at Shirk

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Illinois Wesleyan got five players in double figures as the Titans held off a stubborn Rose-Hulman team in an 86-76 win in the championship game of the Holiday Inn Express West Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Shirk Center.

No. 24-ranked Illinois Wesleyan is 3-1 and the Engineers are 2-1. IWU had a 40-29 lead at halftime and enjoyed a 15 point lead at 51-36 with 15:09 left in the game. Rose-Hulman closed to within six points at 66-60 with 4:52 left before the Titans went on an 8-0 to boost their advantage to 74-60 with 2:21 remaining. The Engineers narrowed the gap to six again at 76-70 with 51 seconds left but six free throws from senior Bryce Dolan, two from junior Andy Stempel and two from sophomore Brady Rose down the stretch closed out the contest.

The Titans were led by the 18 points of Dolan, who knocked in eight of eight free throw tried. Sophomore Jaylen Beasley scored 16 off the bench with four 3-point fielders, while Rose (14), Stempel (13) and junior Trevor Seibring (10) also hit double digits in points.

IWU outrebounded Rose-Hulman, 35-32 and was led by a career-high eight from Stempel. The Titans connected on 13 of 25 3-point attempts and committed 10 turnovers compared to 15 for Rose-Hulman. Joel Pennington and Dolan each handed out five assists as IWU had 20 assists on their 29 baskets.

Rose-Hulman also placed five players in double figures, led by the 21-point, 11-rebound effort of Jimmy Miller.

In the third place game, Wilmington College (Ohio) was a 72-64 winner over Fontbonne University. Zach McCorkle had 19 points and Will Patrick added 12 for the Quakers. The Griffins were paced by the 13 points of Jared Greenlee.

What's Next?
The Titans have nearly a week off from games, playing at home next Saturday, Nov. 28 against the No. 13-ranked Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops. OWU is 4-0 prior to a game against Trine Tuesday ... Their wins have been over Otterbein (80-75), Capital (72-59), Alma (96-77) and Calvin (91-83) ... Ohio Wesleyan was last at the Shirk Center on March 7, 2014 as the Bishops lost to St. Norbert, 87-79 in an NCAA tournament first round game.

NOTES: Dolan now has 133 career 3-pointers in 87 games and is No. 11 all-time at IWU. Just ahead of him with 135 career treys is Mark Aubry (71 games, 1992-95).
