BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Illinois Wesleyan proved up to the task of a run-and-gun system, outscoring Greenville College, 150-117, on Dennie Bridges Court at the Shirk Center on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
The Titans (1-1) set a school record for points in a game, eclipsing the old mark set in a 132-91 home win over Grinnell College on March 1, 2001 in an NCAA tournament game. The 37 assists handed out also bested the old mark of 31 set in the Grinnell game.
The 267 combined points topped the old IWU mark of 228, set in 1999 when Illinois Wesleyan downed Aurora, 115-113 in double overtime.
Illinois Wesleyan scored 72 of their points in the lane and received 61 points from bench players. Five IWU players had career scoring highs, led by the 27 points of junior
Trevor Seibring. Sophomore
Brady Rose had 15, junior
Andy Stempel had 16, sophomore
Jaylen Beasley scored 17 and freshman
Colin Bonnett had 14.
The Titans outrebounded the Panthers, 54-33, and Stempel led the way with a career-high nine. Rose had eight assists, also a career best.
Illinois Wesleyan held onto a 45-43 lead with 6:51 to play in the first half before going on a 33-13 run to close out the period and take a commanding 78-56 lead into the locker room.
Ryan Coyle, who finished with 22 points, had 19 in the first 20 minutes to lead IWU.
The Panthers (0-1) forced the issue with their up-tempo style and made 17 steals as the Titans committed 23 turnovers. Greenville got 24 points from DeAndre Brown and 22 points out of Michael Hohm. The Panthers stroked 44 3-point field goal attempts and made 16. IWU was 12 of 27 in 3-point shooting.
What's Next?Illinois Wesleyan hosts the Holiday Inn Express West Tournament this weekend. Rose-Hulman plays Fontbonne at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, and IWU hosts Wilmington (Ohio) at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the losing teams will meet at 2 p.m. and the winning teams square off at 4 p.m.
