IWU Volleyball Claims Upset at #16 Elmhurst in Five Sets

ELMHURST, Ill. -- For the second time this season, the Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team upset a nationally-ranked squad, topping No. 16 Elmhurst in five sets at R.A. Faganel Hall in Elmhurst on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

The Titans won for the seventh straight time and improved to 17-4 overall and 3-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with set scores of 26-24, 21-25, 22-25, 25-18, 17-15. The Bluejays fell to 17-7 and also 3-1 in the CCIW.
On Sept. 16, IWU knocked off the University of Chicago in five sets when the Maroons were ranked No. 13 in the nation.

In the decisive fifth set, IWU trailed 4-1 early and was behind 13-11 before reeling off three straight points to claim a 14-13 lead.

Illinois Wesleyan had three players with double-figure kills, led by freshman Tyler Brown with 20, Anne Cummings with 12 and sophomore Kyleigh Block with 10. The Titans led in kills 64-61 and had a .203 hitting percentage to .181 for Elmhurst.
Brown also paced IWU with 27 defensive digs and two service aces while providing two blocks.

Junior Colleen Rynne had 33 set assists with freshman Leah Seielstad getting 15 assists and two aces.

Senior Mary Rankin had 16 digs and Block had 15 while freshman Heidi Dague led the team with three total blocks and freshman Rachel Burkman had two.

What's Next?
The chance to topple more nationally-ranked opponents continues as the Titans travel to Wisconsin this weekend to play in the seven-team Wis.-Oshkosh Tournament. IWU faces the host school, No. 19-nationally ranked Wis.-Oshkosh, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, then will play Martin Luther College at 10 a.m. and No. 12-nationally ranked Wis.-Whitewater at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17.
