Box Score INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Illinois Wesleyan football team lost for the first time in 2014, falling 13-3 to the Simpson Storm at Buxton Stadium in Indianola, Iowa, on Saturday, Sept. 20.
Illinois Wesleyan is now 2-1 while the Storm improved to 3-0. The loss snapped a string of 22 straight games in September dating back to a loss to Mt. St. Joseph on Sept. 15, 2007. It also end s a string of seasons dating back to 2008 in which the Titans have started out 3-0 (with wins each year over Hope, Alma, and Aurora).
The Titans had 347 yards of total offense to 331 for the Storm but Simpson ran 75 plays to 65 for IWU and had a commanding edge in possession time (36:42 to 23:18).
The Titans' only scoring came with 7:04 to play in the game on a 41 yard field goal by junior
Michael Kelley, capping a nine-play, 43 yard drive.
Wide receiver
Andrew Javorka had 14 receptions for 150 yards. The 14 catches is tied for fifth most in an IWU single game and one behind the record shared by four (Chris Bisaillon; Carroll; Nov 11, 1989; Ed Brady at Wheaton; Oct 29, 1983; Eric White, Wis.-Eau Claire; Sep 11, 2004 and Zac Williams, at DePauw; Sept 11, 1999).
Freshman quarterback
Jack Warner completed 28 of 46 passes for 282 yards, was intercepted once and was sacked twice. The 46 pass attempts is tied for eighth most in an IWU game and the 28 completions is tied for third most in a game.
Warner also rushed for 47 yards as the Titans got 65 on the ground.
Anfernee Roberts ran for 18 yards on 10 carries.
Sophomore linebacker
Sean Garvey had 16 total tackles, including 10 solo, for the Titans while senior defensive back
Niko Garcia had 15 (six solo) and sophomore linebacker
Adam O'Grady added 10 total tackles. Senior
Tyrell Bolden made an interception for a 12 yard return and
Kevin Slawkowski also had an interception for the second straight week.
"Simpson is a good football team, but I don't know if we played our best," IWU head coach
Norm Eash told WJBC Radio after the game. "We were in the red zone three times in the first half and came away with nothing, which is disappointing. They had a good defensive plan against us, but we have to be able to finish things."
What's Next?IWU has a bye week next Saturday and will play next against Carthage on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Tucci Stadium at 6 p.m. to open the 2014 College Conerence of Illinois and Wisconsin campaign.
