Live VideoWHEATON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team used three first half goals to cruise past Dubuque College 4-2 in the first round of the NCAA tournament at Wheaton's Joe Bean Stadium on Friday, Nov. 14. The Titans, 15-6-1 this season, will face Hope College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Wheaton.
The Flying Dutch, who are 17-3-2 this season, advanced to Saturday's second round match by knocking off regional host Wheaton, 1-0 in the second overtime.
After conceding a goal in the seventh minute (6:45), the Titans answered with an equalizer on sophomore
Skyler Tomko's 12th goal of the season just 55 seconds later to knot the score up at one. IWU would then score two more goals before the half was over, coming from senior
Tess Bottorff (20:39) and senior
Alex Partipilo (42:02) to take a 3-1 lead into the half. Bottorff would then find the back of the net again in the second half at the 59:11 mark to give the Titans a commanding 4-1 lead. IWU would give up another goal in the 81st minute (80:20) to cut the lead to 4-2, before holding on to win by the same score.Â
Dubuque came into the match with a six-game unbeaten streak, and had won 11 of their last 12 games including before falling to the Titans. Sophomore goalkeeper
Dana Jourdan picked up the win for the Titans, improving her record to 15-5-1 while making three saves. IWU outshot the Spartans 14-10, including a 9-5 shots on goal differential for the game.
IWU IN THE NCAA: Illinois Wesleyan has now advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second straight year, and for only the fifth time in school history. IWU is now 4-4-3 in seven overall NCAA Division III tournament appearances ... The Titans are looking to advance past the second round for the first time in school history, falling to national runner-up Trinity (Texas) 5-4 on penalty kicks last season after battling to a 1-1 tie.
