KENOSHA, Wis. – The No. 4-ranked Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team trailed by as many as 14 in the first half and could get no closer than three late in an 80-73 loss to Carthage at Tarbel Arena in Kenosha, Wis., on Saturday (Jan. 25).
The Titans are now 15-3 overall and 5-2 in the in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, tied for first with Wheaton, Augustana and Carthage (who improved to 12-6 overall).
The Red Men trailed the Titans early, 10-5, then scored 12 straight points to go ahead 17-10 with 13:31 to go and never trailed the remainder of the game. Carthage led by as many as 14 points at 32-18 with 6:08 to go in the first half and led at halftime, 43-36.
"Carthage came out with a lot of energy and shot the ball well. Our game plan was to take away the 3-pointer and unfortunately we didn't do that," IWU head coach
Ron Rose said in a postgame interview with WJBC Radio."The difference at the start was the difference in the end."
Rose was happy the team got it to a one-possession game, trailing by three at 72-69 with 1:57 to play in the game, but two straight Carthage buckets extended their lead to seven points with 42 seconds left. "We didn't play extremely well but we played very, very hard," said Rose. "We're disappointed with the loss but are still tied for first (in the CCIW) with four home games coming up."
IWU outrebounded Carthage 35-31 with 16 offensive rebounds and the Titans were guilty of eight turnovers to 10 for the Red Men.
