Titans Move Past Bears to Continue in NCAA Tournament

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 10 Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team pushed past Washington University, 71-67, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at the WU Fieldhouse Saturday evening.
 
The Titans (23-5) had four players reach double-digits offensively, which helped them advance past the Bears (21-6) to the next round of the tournament, which is to be played March 16 against College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe North Central.
 
♦ IWU controlled the first half immediately after its first possession, leading by as much as 10 points early and then late in the half.

♦ The Titans led Wash U heading into halftime, 32-23, going 14-for-29 from the field, 2-for-9 from behind the free throw line, and 50 percent from the free throw line.

♦ IWU continued its success in the second half, until the Bears began cutting the Titans' lead short, coming within striking distance just over 12 minutes into the game.

♦ The Bears' Tim Cooney completed a layup with 4:16 on the clock, tying the game, 57-57, and then leading by one after making a free throw.

♦ However, IWU didn't let their lead last long, as the team jumped ahead by seven points in just two minutes, highlighted by a dunk by Eric Dortch to bring the score at 58-65.

♦ The Titans held onto their lead, up by four at the buzzer after going 13-for-28 from the field.

What's Next?
The Titans will play North Central next Saturday in the third round. The site will be determined later, but it is likely to be at Naperville. The Titans and Cardinals split on their home courts this season. North Central was a 64-60 winner over defending national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday.
