Titans Baseball Splits on Saturday in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Jeff Johnson pitched a complete game five-hitter and struck out 11 as No. 17-ranked Illinois Wesleyan scored in the ninth to earn a 2-1 win over St. Norbert on Saturday (March 23). The Titans lost the afternoon game to Washington U., 6-3.

The Titans are 7-4 this spring after the split.

St. Norbert Game
♦ IWU scored the winning run in the ninth as shortstop Matt Workman led off with a single to right field and went to second on a Tim Coonan single. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by centerfielder Jon Frericks. After senior Kevin Callahan was intentionally walked to load the bases, junior third baseman Johnathan Erickson hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Workman.

♦ Illinois Wesleyan's first run came in the second as senior catcher A.J. Nathan doubled to left center and went to third on a ground out. With two outs, senior Anthony Lopez had an infield single that scored Nathan.

♦ Coonan, Workman and Lopez each had two hits as the Titans had 10 in the game.

Washington U. Game
♦ The Titans, who got 12 hits in the game, scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh. With one out, Frericks reached on an error by the second baseman. Workman singled and Coonan singled home Frericks. After a fly out, sophomore designated hitter Nick Hahn singled home Workman.

♦ IWU got the bases loaded in the ninth but managed only one run. Erickson and Hahn singled and Callahan walked before Nathan hit into a double play that chased home Erickson.

♦ Hahn had three hits while Coonan, Lopez, Erickson and Frericks each had two.

♦ Sophomore starter John Munyon (2-1) was tagged with the loss. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

What's Next?
♦ Weather permitting, Illinois Wesleyan hosts Beloit in a doubleheader on Wednesday (March 27) at 1 p.m. at Horenberger Field.
