BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team split a pair of games with Concordia Chicago on Saturday (March 24) at Horenberger Field, winning the opener 8-6 and losing the nightcap 9-6.
The No. 19-ranked Titans are 8-3 this season while the No. 22-ranked Cougars are 10-3. The same two teams battle at Horenberger Field at 12 p.m. Sunday (March 25).
After falling behind 4-0 in the opener, the Titans put up five in the third with four of those runs coming on a grand slam home run by sophomore third baseman
Johnathan Erickson.
The Titans got two in the eighth to break a 6-6 tie. With one out, sophomore centerfielder
Jon Frericks singled to center and went to second on a wild pitch. Junior catcher
A.J. Nathan had an infield single to send Frericks to third.
Senior rightfielder
Kevin Sullivan was called on to execute a squeeze bunt to bring home Frericks and reached on an error by the pitcher as Nathan went to second.
Junior second baseman
Matt Workman reached on a bunt single to load the bases and junior shortstop
Zach Scott drove home Nathan with a single to right center field.
In outstanding middle relief, freshman
John Munyon worked four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three before giving way to freshman
Chris Bobo (1-0), who pitched two scoreless innings and struck out five to earn the win.
The Titans amassed 11 hits in game two but shaky pitching allowed 15. Senior leftfielder
Mark McDermott had three hits with two RBI and sophomore designated hitter
Bobby Czarnowski had three hits with a home run.
Erickson added two more hits in game two.
Senior righthander
Joe Sweeney (3-1) was the losing hurler, going the first five and allowing three earned runs on nine hits with a strikeout and two walks.
