Titans Explode in Second Half for 65-44 Home CCIW Win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team outscored Augustana by 18 points in the second half en route to a 65-44 win at the Shirk Center on Wednesday (Jan. 11).

With their seventh straight win, the Titans rose to 10-4 overall and 3-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Augustana fell to 9-5 overall and 1-2 against the league.

In the first half the Vikings were ahead 11-7 with 12:00 before intermission before the Titans went on an 18-0 run to put the score at 25-11. Augustana sophomore Gianna Pecora broke the run with a free throw at 3:43 left in the half. Augustana then went on a 13-0 run of their own to put themselves back in the game and the Titans led by a score of 27-24 at the half.

In the second half the Titans maintained a steady lead to end the game with a convincing 21-point lead. Overall the Titans shot .421 from the field (24 of 57) and connected on six of 15 3-pointers (.400) while making 11 of 23 free throws.

Senior Olivia Lett led the team with 22 pointa while junior Melissa Gardner added 21. Lett was 8-of-15 from the field (.534) and 6-for-6 on free throws with four rebounds. Gardner was 7-of-12 from the field with five 3-pointers.

Augustana was only 16 of 55 from the field (.291) and made three of 12 from beyond the arc (.250). The Vikings made nine of their 14 free throw attempts. Junior Natalie Runge led the team with 13 total points, going 5-of-9 from the field (.556).

Sophomores Whitney Scurlock (shown) and Shelby Jackson each got a team-high six rebounds for the Titans, who were outrebounded 44-37. Kristina Howard and Whitney Miller each had nine boards for the Vikings..

The Titans host Carthage at 5 p.m. on Saturday in a battle for first place in the league. No. 25-ranked Carthage is 3-0 in the CCIW and 12-2 overall after its sixth straight win, a 55-33 decision over North Park on Wednesday.
